About the Author

Rick Steves has spent 100 days every year since 1973 exploring Europe. Rick produces a public television series (Rick Steves' Europe), a public radio show (Travel with Rick Steves), and an app and podcast (Rick Steves Audio Europe); writes a bestselling series of guidebooks and a nationally syndicated newspaper column; organizes guided tours that take thousands of travelers to Europe annually; and offers an information-packed website (RickSteves.com). With the help of his hardworking staff of 80 at Europe Through the Back Door—in Edmonds, Washington, just north of Seattle—Rick's mission is to make European travel fun, affordable, and culturally broadening for Americans.

Cameron Hewitt writes and edits guidebooks for Rick Steves’ Europe. He first visited Budapest on a lark in 1999… and now he can’t stay away. From Budapest’s colorful and quirky history, to its grandiose architecture, to its mouthwatering food, to its uniquely enjoyable thermal baths, Cameron can’t get enough of this enthralling, enigmatic, exhilarating city. When he’s not on the road, Cameron lives in Seattle with his wife, Shawna.

Don't look for anything out of the ordinary here. I was very disappointed in this book because I was looking for more than run-of-the-mill information on Slovenia The title is Croatia and Slovenia- nowhere does it indicate that many pages would be devoted to other countries. Of the 835 pages, many pages deal with just general tourist information; pages 40-397 are about Croatia; about 100 pages on Bosnia-Herzegovina...and 30 pages about Montenegro. Only 187 pages are allocated to Slovenia. The information that is provided on Slovenia applies to standard mass tourism. Although there are some few glimmers, like a small section on beekeeping. Maybe the section on Croatia is better. Had I scrutinized the contents before hand,I definitely would not have purchased this book. "Slovenia," of the Cardogan guides by James Stewart, although a bit dated ,is a much better resource.

I had bought two other guidebooks before I found out about this one. When we got to Croatia and started to use it, we abandoned the others, both in that country and in Slovenia as well. I recommend it highly.

We have always followed Rick Steves on TV and when we take European trips he is our favorite source for info for the way we like to travel. We like to make our own Itinerary, but use Ricks recommendations as a guide. For Croatia, this has been really GREAT and I don't think I could have done it without the tips and recommendations. I cannot wait to take the trip.

I downloaded on my Kindle so I would not have to carry a book. It is harder to read & find maps on Kindle version but I will take it on Kindle for convenience.

Not bad - as long as you go where Rick Steves wants you to go. You still need Lonely Planet or other broader guides if doing extensive travel in the region, especially eastern Croatia. But I found the book more useful than the others in the areas Mr. Steves covers - with far more opinions, recommendations, dismissals and truly useful tips. This was my first e version travel book - not that easy to flip back and forth, even if you bookmark. And the maps don't show up very well - most of the time I had to orient the tablet in the way the map would display in the largest format and usually have to look at it sideways - needs a little work - or better e book editing

While I haven't taken my vacation yet, just reading it is educational and entertaining. Having used Rick Steves' books before, I assume that it will be a valuable resource on our vacation. We have used it to plan activities, and guidance on places to stay. Unlike Rick, I'm not going on a trip to live out of a backpack! Will update this review after the trip!

If you are going to do Slovenia and Croatia on your own, this book is extremely helpful. We just got back from a trip of five days in Croatian Dalmatian coast and 2 days in Slovenia with a day of travel in between the two. We were there at the end of September which is an excellent time to visit as far as not having to deal with crowds except for Dubrovnik. We flew into Dubrovnik and stayed there for 3 days before renting a car and driving up the coast to Orebic across the water from Korcula for 2 days. We then took a drive up to Lake Bled in Slovenia where we stayed at Pension Mayer for two days. The book was extremely helpful in regards to picking restaurants to eat at and activities to do. It was also extremely helpful to avoid crowds. Dubrovnik was bad during the day with all the cruise ship passengers coming into town so we did some simple but very enjoyable day excursions to get away from Dubrovnik Cavtat, Lokrum, Zaton Bay Sea Kayaking (Sea Kayaking through Huck Finn Croatia and not Steve recommendation). We walked the wall early (at 8 am) before all the cruise ship passengers came in (as Steve recommends) and that was a spot on recommendation. The only lodging recommendation we took from the book was Pension Mayer in Lake Bled which I would definitely recommend. Basic room but reasonable prices, excellent breakfast and restaurant and good location for checking out Lake Bled. Hindsight is 20/20 but if I had to do it all over again I think I would have spent all my time in Croatia.Read more ›

This book talks down to the reader as if all Americans need to be convinced that travel is a good idea, and they must work to enjoy it. Once you get over that, it has some good background, and it's lightweight.
