The Eyewitness guides are gorgeous books, and they are durable enough to stand up to your travels. We bought this one after finding an old one my father had bought for my parents' trip to England almost 20 years ago. I found the detailed drawings and photos a great supplement to our mostly text-only Rick Steves book. As much as I am a bibliophile and love holding physical books in my hands, consider getting the electronic version and take an iPad or other tablet PC with you when you travel. It is much lighter and you can take a whole library of these gorgeous books with you!

Beautifully illustrated. This is the best for visually introducing England of the several travel books I purchased to prepare for my visit there. It also gives a fine, concise history of the country and iits regions. It is a bit heavy to carry around all day, so a map or second lighter book might help.
