Fodor's continues to update its travel guides every couple of years. This 24rd edition of "Fodor's Scotland" is as current as the eve of 2014, in which Scotland will host its second Homecoming event, the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, and a vote on independence. The content is nicely organized to be user-friendly, with a front section advertising the 13 experiences everyone should have in Scotland (and the guide's only color photographs). Following is an introduction to Scotland and a series of geographically oriented chapters. The various regions of Scotland are covered in useful detail, especially the Highlands and Islands. The cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow naturally rate their own chapters.

The guide's biggest strength is Fodor's reliably excellent graded listings of accommodations and places to eat. There are lots of phone numbers and websites for further research. The sample itineraries of attractions are quite good, while the sketch maps of the various regions of Scotland are good enough for planning purposes, if perhaps insufficiently detailed for actual navigation outside towns and cities. There are separate chapters on golf, Scottish culture, and the practicalities of getting around Scotland.

Fodor's doesn't put much effort into pictures and illustrations in these guides, which are designed for those stubbornly traditional travelers who really do want to read about their destinations. The good news is that there is lots of detail. Coupled with a good roadmap, this guide may be all most travelers need. For those potential visitors to the wonderful destination that is Scotland, this Fodor's Guide is very highly recommended.

While this book contains good information, I found the Kindle version hard to navigate. The maps are totally inadequate for planning and I found it curious that it is called a the "Full color Travel Guide" since it is very short on photos and illustrations.

Fodor's guides are fantastic for planning purposes. You can read them cover to cover almost like a novel, and they have great informative sections on cultural topics. Definitely a valuable planning tool.
