We are in Chile for a month long driving tour using this book along with two others: Moon Chile and the Lonely Planet Chile. We always use more than one book to plan this long a trip. The DK EYEWITNESS TRAVEL book is very organized and has great pictures of a region, a museum, or a palace etc. We find that using more than one book helps us to pick and choose the sights, restaurants, and activities for the time we are in a country. This book doesn't have as many details as the other two books, but we always end up bringing and using all of our planning guides.
We have used the DK EYEWITNESS books before and because they are very organized, they are a good resource to begin our planning. This book doesn't have as many details as the other two books mentioned above, but we always end up using all of our planning guides. Many times, I will read one book in the evening while my husband reads one of the others and then we trade off.
Because we have been to Chile before, we did not explore Santiago on this trip. We drove west to the coast from the airport and then began our touring with the vineyards in the Central Valley close to the coast. We have continued to Santa Cruz and found the information in this book to be excellent.
DK books always present a basic historical, geographical and seasonal background for the traveler. So far this book has been a winner.

I started using DK Travel about eight years ago. I have traveled out of the country at least once a year after that. These are so superior to the other travel books, that they are all I buy!. They have lavish pictures and illustrations and make you very aware of the things you should not miss. The book is organized to answer all of your travel questions, from what to pack to how to change your money. Other travelers have seen my books with me, and have immediately bought them, too.

Traveled to Chile in December 2013 and January 2014. In general the maps and locations of the attractions could be better. Please see below for example. Travels included 2 days in Punta Arenas, Patagonia that included renting a car to see the area. We had decided to visit Seno Otway but the location in the guide was so vague that we were unable to locate on our first tour and had to perform additional research via internet to find route, a better description of location is required.

I have used these guides in multiple countries and they are quite helpful. Lots of local color, details, and some ideas, albeit a bit understated in a few cases (as in a short paragraph describing the Human Rights museum in Santiago, a moving destination and deserved more discussion, IMHO). The Chilean version gives you options and then you have to sort through them and sometimes it is a bit daunting to differentiate between a couple of seemingly similar sites. Still, it was quite helpful to us and far better than relying on the hotel staff for ideas. I would suggest that, when available, that you buy another guide book that advises on 'top things to do in 1, 2, and 3 days.' That combination would be the best option for those who enjoy travel but don't want to be on a tour bus all day.
