Portugal makes me wax lyrical. It is hard to overstate what an incredibly gorgeous country this is. So many people think of Switzerland, or Austria, or Italy, or Spain. Sit down with this excellent book and let the skilled writers of Lonely Planet introduce you to lovely, lovely Portugal.
First, let's talk briefly about the country. Portugal is blessed with diverse geography, rich culture, and a history that has not been obscured by war or diluted by decades of consumerism. Authenticity is one of the prime reasons people visit Portugal. While so many other destinations is western Europe can feel like preserved museum pieces, Portugal is the real deal.
This book is dedicated to capturing that authenticity and presenting it to the traveler. From Faro to seafood, from the beaches to the mountains, from quaint Obidos to mighty Lisbon, there's something here for every taste. The guide is arranged with typical Lonely Planet completeness. It includes well thought through recommendations and itineraries that are genuine, and not just constructed randomly. There are themes that give each of these travel devices continuity, which all adds up to give the reader an authentic experience.
This book is the most comprehensive travel guide to Portugal now in print. I was surprised at how broad and encyclopedic the coverage of the country is. Travel guides are probably the only books I still go to the physical store for, so that I can see the layout and style, usually leaning towards Fodor's or Rick Steves. I didn't this time, and ordered this guide based on Amazon reviews. Big mistake for a visual person like me. There is plenty of up to date info, but this book is NOT user friendly. The pages are thin with tiny print. Even the headings don't stand out. Few pictures. And it is an organizational nightmare. One reads of a store or restaurant in a Lisbon neighborhood, then must go back 30 pages or so to find the map. And then go back 10 more pages to see where that neighborhood is in the big picture-sometimes you can find it, sometimes not. Why on earth wouldn't a city Like Lisbon be organized by neighborhood-maybe even color-coded and a picture or two? I learned a few things, but ended up with a headache. Wish I hadn't begun highlighting. I'd have returned it in a snap.

A good, comprehensive guide for tourists who are interested in sightseeing throughout Portugal and want a choice of good possibilities for lodging, eating, shopping, and entertainment at a moderate price level. It is a good complement to Rick Steves'guide to Portugal.

Not enough photographs on the Kindle book. I don't find the clicking of a link to another part of the book and then going back to where I was easy to use. (I can't remember the exact problems.)
