ROUGH GUIDE and LONELY PLANET used to be different. You might say that they were for those who liked to think of themselves as travelers rather than tourists. Put another way, they were for people who wanted to learn about the places they visited, not just tick off a bunch of sights. ROUGH GUIDE seems still to be that way (not sure of that) but publish so rarely that I tend to choose another more up-to-date guide. LONELY PLANET TURKEY can be useful for checking the times things are open and for seeing brief descriptions, but it tends to be shallow. I also personally dislike its attempt to be "cute" with corny-sounding titles. Generally I just feel a bit insulted by its approach and not what I look to for serious information. And now that one can get better information on hotels and restaurants online (e.g., TRIPADVISOR), it's all the more serious a shortcoming that this guide doesn't go deeper into the culture or provide more detailed accounts of architectural sites.

There is some useful information in the book, so I can't say not to buy it. Just don't count on it to go much beyond the surface. And if you are just making a very quick trip and want to know the essentials, this guide can provide that much.

PS - I agree with the others that the Kindle edition could be so much better with easier navigation.

Lonely Planet has done a fine job with this Travel Guide For Turkey. The Top 10 things I like most about this guide are as follows.
1) Excellent "street smart" info in the back of the book including toilet facilities (different in rural areas), key phases, money, phones, etc.
2) Good info on health care in Turkey and how to prevent and deal with infectious agents, food and water risks, etc.
3) Good cultural behavior information; how to relate to the Turkish people. Meaning of gestures. Proper dress and behavior, etc.
4) Lists a wealth of secondary resources available on web sites.
5) Best seasons to visit various areas of Turkey. Monthly temperature and precipitation by zone.
6) Color photos of many locations, cultural attractions, palaces, mosques, to help build enthusiasm about Turkey.
7) Enough information about accommodations, meals, museum costs, transport costs so you can budget your trip and be positioned to negotiate.
8) Clear and helpful color maps of cities, districts in cities, archaeological sites, transportation systems, including ferries and much more.
9) Capsule histories of the regions and ancient cities in Turkey.
10) Information on travels of Paul and other Christians, including crusaders, on the Turkish seas and land. Important sites are highlighted.
11) Provides background on Islam and various religious and day-to-day practices as well as identifying religious and other holidays.
The list goes on. This guidebook is educational and I know it will prove helpful on site. Don't leave home for Turkey without it.
To me, wi-fi access is fine, but a guidebook is always "on" and makes for a great record of your trip as well.

The Kindle version is hard to use. I figured it was just like the paperback but its not. It is a special version for the reader and doesn't really have a proper table of contents and no index. I have an android tablet with a kindle reader app and this version takes advantage of special kindle reader features that the android app doesnt have. It was really hard to traverse to cities tog et information. Waste of money for me, I hardly used it.

There is a clear, no nonsense explanation of the subject, with extremely useful tips. We used a tour guide that the Planet recommended for viewing Epheses, and just absolutely could not have been more pleased. Avoided the pitfalls encountered with other guided tours in Turkey. Also, the maps are extremely clear and easy to copy so that it isn't necessary to take the whole book around with you whenever you step out of the hotel. It's not very fancy or colorful, but very pragmatic. This is the first time that we have used the Lonely Planet and will certainly not be the last.

While this is one of those "blue-spined," mostly black and white texts (as opposed to the green-spined, full-color ones), this Lonely Planet guide contains a tremendous amount of information. So, while it is not visually spectacular, it certainly does serve its purpose.

Pros:
-Riveting sections on "Turkey Today" and "Turkish Table" (I love the idea of meals being a joyous celebration!) And, most assuredly, read the "Survival Guide" (this is one way to limit unpleasant surprises on your journey).
-Tons of recommendations for "foodies."
-"Free" and "Top Choice" markers allow the reader to quickly locate both wallet-friendly hot-spots (like the Ethnography Museum found on page 191) and the best spots (like the cosmopolitan hang-out Orta Kahve as discussed on 508).
-"If You Like..." So, if you like museums, there is a list for that. And, if you like ruins, there is a list for that. As someone who has little interest in backpacking or bicycling, I appreciate specific lists. It allows me to quickly hone my itinerary and spot any essentials that I may have missed. Love it!

Con:
-It could use just a few more color examples, illustrations, and photos.

Nonetheless, if you are planning your trip to Turkey, you need this text! It is the #1 bestselling guide to Turkey for a reason: it is thoroughly researched, immaculately edited, and offers a diversity of suggestions. It is pretty close to perfect!
