Don't leave home without STREETWISE.' --The New York Times

"STREETWISE is an absolute travel essential." --Travel & Leisure Magazine

"In a strange city, your sense of direction is only as good as the map in your hands. The best maps to carry are published by STREETWISE." --Chicago Daily Herald

About the Author

STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn’t match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we’ve done the work, now you have the adventure.

In the end, it’s not about the map, it’s about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It’s about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

One of the best current maps of Tokyo.

Another really good thing about the map is the listing of subway/train station numbers and lines.

This is a good detailed map to Tokyo - for once I didn't get completely lost. I wish I had had it on my first three visits when (among many other mis-steps),I spent hours confused on the subway where it is difficult to read station maps becasue of the serious crowds. Trust me you need your own so you can read it at your convenience. Too the architectural drawings of major buildings in different districts are a good visual aid when walking around. Tokyo is a difficult city alright and without a detailed map you are doomed.

Unless you want to carry around an encyclopedic street guide weighing five pounds this Street Wise is the one for you. For the casual or business traveler this compact laminated map is the best I've found....and I've tried too many to list.

This should be a must-have if you're traveling to Tokyo. The ability to correlate desired destination locations with the proper subway stops was invaluable. After a quick glance, I could immediately tell which subway line I needed, (Line Color) what stop to get off at (Station Name and Number) and what exit number I should take so that I wasn't completely confused once I arrived street level. Starting the first day, I could navigate the major areas of Tokyo as if I lived there for years.

Only criticism: Subway Transfer locations should be better labeled to see what lines connect a little easier. Just carry the free (English) subway map for that as a backup.

I buy from this Street Wise series even if I am only going to spend 2 or 3 days in a city. Shows the train stations, some buildings by name, and the Tokyo map even shows if there is a street light at an intersection. I generally prefer StreetWise over a paper map because I just have to fold it left to right, not top to bottom as well. And the maps are hardy.

Someone more familiar with the city might be able to you why the train station "Aoyama 1 chome" in the 2010 edition of the map is sometimes written as Aoyama i chome in other sources.

Free advice: take a small skinny sharpie to mark / circle where you want to go. Tokyo is such a big city that you might wish you didn't keep having to locate, for example, your hotel or Tokyo Tower every time you open it. Since it's well laminated, a sharpie marker will probably work best.

You have to be brave to go to Tokyo, it is very different from any other city, the crowds and the subway only add to the confusion. This map was wonderful for helping us to decipher the subway system, which is quite overwhelming. this map did a great job of getting us safely to our destination and pointing out important landmarks. I wouldn't go there without this map!

We travel a great deal and have to admit- Tokyo is amazing, unforgetable and daunting to find your way around without this map. Often we're just fine with whatever you can get at the local I. Not so with Tokyo, save yourself a lot of frustration in being disoriented- this is a huge city tightly compacted and not to be missed. We were there 5 days and this map was priceless- we rarely buy maps but this one made a Huge difference for us.

There are great tourist maps in Tokyo that you can get at the information/tourist centers, but if you are going to be in the city for any period of time, this is essential. The other tourist maps will rip and tear easily and this is good-quality. Would like for it to also include a subway route image as well.

Overall...good purchase for me, but not necessary if you are only in Tokyo for a very short stay.

This is a really good map of Tokyo but I recommend to those who have problems with small characters to take a magnifying glass with them. In that case they would be able fully enjoy qualities of this map. Of course I also appreciate that it can be easily used even in rainy and windy weather ....

Took a vacation to Japan in the Spring. If you do not speak Japanese and are not on a tour, this is worth picking up.
