The writing quality is awesome with excellent descriptions and helpful tips; the photographs are NatGeo worthy; and the information is very well organized.

For Xian, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong this guide is very good with detailed maps and advice on accommodations, food, and historical sites.

I own both this "Discover" guide, plus the regular, full-sized Lonely Planet China guide. To my thinking, this one is a FAR better compromise.

It is less than half the weight and thickness, costs slightly less, seems to cover the general attractions well enough, still has various maps including pull-out Beijing city and transport maps in the rear, and has far, far more photos to help you decide how to budget your time. Other people may differ, but photos are really important to me in a travel guide.

My suggestion would be to get this book as a base, then maybe a separate book that focuses on your city or region of interest. Or search out info on the internet if there is some specific historical period or other special topic that draws you to China.

I'm not planning a trip to China any time soon, and yet I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The full-color photographs are beautiful. It's not just a travel book for tourists planning a trip, but also a wonderful way to educate yourself about Chinese culture and history, as well as a great way to feel up-to-date with the current culture of the country.

There are two Lonely Plant China guidebooks on the market. I have both. Of the two, this is better. I found it more interesting, more full of salient facts, wish they had more than just the beijing subway guide. All in all, I will take this book to China with me instead of the other one for the above reasons. It is shorter but more practical and useful.

We are avid travelers, and tend to prefer packed itineraries with an historic emphasis. China has been on the top of our wish list for a while, and I was hoping this book would give us enough information to compose a plan with more depth than just the usual "Great wall - Terracotta warriors - Three Gorges" arc.

Fortunately, this book did not disappoint.

The writing quality is awesome with excellent descriptions and helpful tips; the photographs are NatGeo worthy; and the information is very well organized. I was particularly happy with that last point - you get helpful itinerary suggestions at the national level, as well as at the regional/city levels, you get top highlights lists, and detour suggestions for sights that you might otherwise overlook.

All in all - I found that I could derive a very decent travel plan, and found that I'm going to need at least 3 weeks to make this trip truly memorable.

This book does justice to an amazing country.

Highly recomended.

This is yet another Lonely Planet travel guide packed with information. I went to China several years ago and no one book can prepare you for any of the areas you may wish to visit. Just visiting Beijing would take a whole book. Speaking of Beijing, in the back of the book is a small pull-out map of the city that shows the transport routes, lists a full street index, and lists the top ten sites. There are numerous full-color photographs in these pages that are very enticing. It's very difficult to decide just what you want to do and no one says you have to have just one book. In fact, I bought several. There's so much information in this book it's almost mind-boggling.

If you're not quite sure where you want to go, Lonely Planet's Discover China is a good place to start. The book opens up with a small map of China and its provinces, each with a page listing. Since the transfer of sovereignty from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong is also widely featured in travel books about China. On the page edges there is color coding, that will enable you to quickly open up to major portions of the country: Beijing & the Great Wall, Xian & the North, Shanghai & the Yangzi Region, Hong Kong & the South, and the Best of the Rest.

The concluding section is "China in Focus," which briefly goes over China today, its history, family travel, the people of China, Chinese cuisine, arts & architecture, religion & beliefs, and China's landscapes. There are numerous informative sidebars scattered throughout the text. For example, one discussed Shanghai for Children and a few activities families can share with their children.

"Lonely Planet Discover China (Full Color Travel Guide)" by Damian Harper, Michael Kohn, Robert Kelly, Daniel McCrohan, Shawn Low, Tienlon Ho, Bradley Mayhew, Piera Chen, Chung Wah Chow, and Christopher Pitts is the perfect book for planning your travel to China. It has a nice compact size that is easy to take along on your trip too.

The book is loaded with beautiful, clear photographs that will definitely wet your appetite for travel. Some of the photos are simply breathtaking. There are suggested itineraries and lots of advice for Western travelers in China. Find out what to expect or not to expect. What you would think is available but won't be. There is plenty of background information on the people, locations, religions, food, getting around, etc.

This little book is a powder keg exploding with information! This is the go to book on travel to China.
