More About the Author

Growing up, my mom shuttled us between our home in California and her original home in Indiana. By age five I was ordering my family around O'Hare International Airport as we changed planes. Obviously the experience stuck as I've been traveling since. I worked as a journalist for many years, covering everything from wars to bars - obviously I prefer the latter. I've been writing travel guidebooks since the mid-1990s and have worked on over 80. I've covered places from glaciers in the Arctic to the beaches of Bali. From beloved Chicago to London to San Francisco to Melbourne. I've lived around the globe.

In writing my books, I try to be the good local friend every reader wishes they have, telling them both what not to miss and what to definitely miss. I look for places and details that you won't find elsewhere, which will elevate your trip way above the norm. And I try to have fun doing it. I hope everyone using one of my books has a fantastic journey, well beyond changing planes at O'Hare. Read more at www.ryanverberkmoes.com

My rating is based on the Apple OSX Kindle reader app... and i'd imagine that the content would be similar on an actual Kindle. Also, although this is my only (and last) purchase of a Lonely Planet travel guide in Kindle format, I would imagine that my complaints with the Bali and Lombok edition can extend to all Lonely Planet Travel Guides in Kindle format. Number one problem, the maps are unreadable! You cannot zoom into see details, let alone basic text. Second problem, basic navigation and indexing is actually less helpful than a regular book (horrible job of integration)! Third problem, simple searching for reviews of accommodations or restaurants... Buy it if you dare and see for yourself. The only advantage to this e-reader version is the savings of weight in one's backpack. But i will look into the Rough Guides on Kindle and see if they are any better.

"Funky little cafe", "funky guesthouse", "funky neighborhood", "funky beach-town", etc. Presumably, this is intended to mean something like "groovy", but like "groovy", using "funky" in this manner is incredibly dated. I can say, without exception, that I don't know anyone that uses the word "funky" to mean anything other than "to smell bad". As such, when a review states that a hostel is "funky", it is definitely not somewhere that I would want to spend a night.

The other word, which seemingly every Lonely Planet guide is laced with, is "ubiquitous". Seriously, it seems that every section of every LP I've ever had (which is no small number) is stocked so full of the word "ubiquitous", that it leads me to believe that LP writer's are paid a commission on how many times they can use it. OK guys, we get it, you succeeded in making the word "ubiquitous" incredibly ubiquitous in your books, very funny.

ALL THAT ASIDE, this is a pretty standard LP guide, with everything you need. Acceptable maps (though some popular destinations are missing them), lodging and food suggestions, and (most importantly) a decent "getting there and away" section for pretty much every where you'd want to go.

Like most LP guides, expect what I like to call the "Lonely Planet Tax" when traveling. By that, I mean that all the prices quoted in the guide, especially for lodging, seem to double as soon as the edition is published as more travelers flock to a particular business. With that in mind, use this guide to point you in the right direction of where the tourist facilities are, and then stay/eat/play at any business other than the ones listed in the guide. This is hardly the fault of the guide, rather, a consequence of LP's popularity.

If you're looking at this book you probably have an upcoming trip to Bali or Lombok. I was only on Bali for 4 days, but this book was very helpful for trip planning. I like this book as it's fairly thin, being only for a few islands rather than the whole country. It has good recommendations, though not enough maps of smaller towns I think. I actually ended up using google maps on my iphone to find some of the places in this book... I was surprised at how much had made it into google maps.

Navigation through the guide makes it almost unusable and we tried with the cloud reader, kindle on nexus 7 and an e-ink kindle. Plus getting useful information from the maps is also very difficult. The kindle interface was evidently designed for reading a book cover to cover and not for jumping quickly from one section to another. Buy the hardcover book instead. That is what we ended up having to do.

I am a loyalist to Lonely Planet travel guides so on a recent trip to Bali, this was an immediate purchase for me. It worked well, but I found myself relying on online guides like TripAdvisor for my hotel stays. I miss the days of the "Off the Beaten Path" sections in Lonely Planet guides. I didn't feel like I got too much unique from this one. Still, it was nice to have on hand.

The paperback version of this book contains a lot of information. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to wade through it and make sense of it. You get 400 pages of fine print. But you have to navigate back and forth between the map on one page and the item descriptions on another, distant, page. There is NO real Table of Contents - just a graphic guide that gives you a vague idea of where to look.

I wish this guide had more photos and tips in addition to straightforward generic information. Many areas and sites we visited were very touristy and I wish the guide had mentioned that. Needed more customized information on the traffic, negotiating rates with taxis and so on. Some of the detailed maps of neighborhoods were tedious to read with legends and references on different pages.

Good guide, but why are the lonely planet maps so hard to use? Why not include the map reference in the the description?
