Book Description

Nationally recognized travel expert and television correspondent Mark Murphy chronicles the dicey, humorous, sometimes bizarre and always entertaining experiences he encounters in far-flung locales when he's not on camera. This highly entertaining multimedia travelogue, complete with exclusive, unpublished video outtakes, focuses Murphy's witty and perceptive lens on the culture of traveling, revealing unforgettable characters and global humanity in all its quirkiness -- from a predatory Cougar Grandma in Germany to a wiseguy shakedown on a picturesque Greek island, serious partying in Ho Chi Minh City, sampling shocking edibles in Cambodia and much more.

WARNING: This is not a "Travel Tips" book.  Travel Unscripted is about the author, his video crew, and their travels.  If you are easily offended by the "F" word or don't appreciate off color humor, then take a pass.  If you are politically correct, ditto.

If you're looking for a guide book or a reference guide to take with you when you travel, this isn't it.  What is guaranteed is a real look at what happens with local cultures in various countries when the cameras stop rolling.  It's travel.  It's unscripted.  And you have been warned.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"If Anthony Bourdain wrote a travel book, this would be it.  Mark Murphy brings a conversational voice, an impertinent 'tude', and a wry eye to life on the road.  Read it twice!" - Rudy Maxa, travel journalist and host of the public television series, Rudy Maxa's World

Star Rating: 5 out of 5
"Whether he's being peppered with fireworks, subjected to squirming insectoid cuisine, or experiencing an involuntary mud massage in the Dead Sea from an enthusiastic woman, Mark Murphy is unflappable in his excitement and interest. His love of travel and his willingness to see the world at a moment's notice made Travel Unscripted a success, and the Travel Unscripted website one of the earliest adopters of video content in its field.

From his childlike wonder at the marvels of Japanese toiletry to his grotesque and hilarious description of StinkyTofu, Murphy provides a friendly and personable voice, offering a playful counterpoint to the detailed recaps of his many adventures overseas. And despite the lovely photography and far-flung locales, it's Murphy that sells the book, and he does so with a winsome smile and a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

While the frustrations of travel and interaction with overly-involved officials are mentioned, they don't bog down the book; instead, Murphy focuses on the on-the-fly solutions he and his crew conjure, as well as the weird and wonderful moments that make each trip memorable.

In short, Travel Unscripted is a love letter to travel and a thoroughly enjoyable read."

From the Author

I love to travel and have been on the road shooting video since 2005.  My two primary crew members, Nick Choo and Gene Kang, both hit the road with me regularly.  I thoroughly enjoy giving these guys a hard time in our different locales, something that's pretty easy to do.

Here's just one example: When I walked into a bar at the hotel we were staying at in Brussels I noticed the two of them intently staring at their iPhones.  That's pretty much their standard pose.  What I discovered on further inspection was the fact that they were playing Words With Friends...with each other!  Seriously?!?!?

I don't have to go looking for material, it just rears it's head on virtually every trip we take.  Whether it's my crew, some overzealous government official, or one of the people we meet along the way, there's usually something funny to comment or report on.  Some may be dismayed at the ongoing barbs or comments I throw out, but they shouldn't be.  It's a product of being the sixth kid in a family of seven.  You can just go ahead and blame my parents...

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring book with lots of scam reviews July 23, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
First off, I love travel adventure books. This book, however, has to be one of the worst I've read. The stories, quite frankly, aren't very interesting. Most of them qualify as "mildly amusing" at best. My reaction to the end of most chapters was along the lines of "Really, that's it? That's all that happened? Why bother writing that up as a story?". Also, as other reviewers have noted the book has absolutely no organization. It's as if somebody just randomly threw the chapters together.

Now, onto the issue of scam reviews. Out of curiosity, I clicked on each of the first five 5 star reviews. Surprise, surprise! All of the reviewers had reviewed exactly one product...this one! That's the problem with Amazon....just too easy to get your friends and associates to write fake 5 star reviews of your book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uninspired and totally scripted June 24, 2012
By Janalla
Format:Hardcover
I can't believe the 5 star reviews! This book (& videos) isn't worth your time! Why read about a guy passed out in author's Las Vegas hotel hallway for 2-3 pages? He says river cruises are for 60+ travelers but the video is just a hard sell for river boat companies that he says are ideal for families. The world is MUCH more interesting than this! And there are a lot of books that are truly unscripted.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crude Book Filled With Off-Color Cliches June 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The author writes as an adolescent using crude terminology and provides almost no information about travel locations to which the reader is forced to accompany him.

I can't imagine an audience for this sophmoric self-promotion. It is less than chewing gum for the mind, rather mindless gags that are not funny and not informative.

The author runs a commercial video travel firm ginning up videos for travel agents to use as sales tools. In the course of the several hours of time I was forced to waste much of the content concerned girls with hot pants, guys drinking themselves stupid at bars and tips for travelers that would already be known by anyone who has taken a trip or two.

Stay away from this terrible book! Travel Unscripted

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible June 25, 2012
By L & A
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has a few funny anecdotes, and I kept hoping it would get more interesting, but it did not. The author didn't fully develop his stories. I was especially hoping for some insightful stores about travel, but the author mostly wrote about himself.

2.0 out of 5 stars Like a Boring Commercial July 4, 2012
By CEG
Format:Kindle Edition
An interesting idea -- an ebook with embedded videos (though if your e-reader doesn't support this feature, you will have to visit the companion web site). If only the content was equally interesting. Despite the constant emphasis on the "unscripted" nature of this travel reporting, it felt anything but. In fact, the frequent mentions of a specific cruise line made it seem downright commercial. The book is merely a supplement to the videos, providing more of a behind-the-scenes look at the difficulties Murphy and crew encountered in obtaining their footage. Not too much about the actual places visited or what Murphy thought about what he saw. The videos are nice, with occasional stunning views, but Murphy is awkward and amateur on-camera and overall, I was bored more than I was entertained.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible self-promotional ego piece. Forget it! June 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I rate this at ZERO stars. This book must have been self-published. It would not pass any editorial review. It is an ego trip and a business promotion for the author's company. If you want a good travel book, Google "great travel writers" or try Bruce Chatwin, Paul Theroux, Pico Iyer. Mark Murphy is as shallow as they come. He should be ashamed. Maybe Amazon should be ashamed to sell it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Witty Travel Book July 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought that I would enjoy this book more than actually did. Yes, the author led me to some spots I have been and to some that I never imagine seeing. On average I would say that the time spent reading it on a trans-Atlantic flight was not time totally wasted. The overuse of "WTF" was boring~and I am no prude. Would I highly recommend this book? Probably not.

This never-before picture of a way of travel was exciting to read. Loved it. I recommend it to those who like to live outside the box.

I didn't even order the book after reading the first few pages. I hate the "F" word and there was just too much of that in the few pages I read.
