The book is now spiral-bound! Only disappointment is the number of trails no longer in this edition of the book. No fault of the author; Northern California would appear to hate off-roading (at least where I live) and as such, obscure trails are disappearing and being gated up. Sad.

Great book but found some flaws already. Not all difficulty levels are marked correctly in the book. But really great book better then getting the maps from forestry service with no difficulty levels marked at all

The older, 2-book version has more information if a bit outdated. I think they condensed this a bit too much to make the single book.

In short: Great map and layouts, accurate instructions for trails iv been on. Recommended !

Pros: Maps have good details about things to see around trail. Accurate mileage log which can be used with odometer.
Cons: Spiral binding is rough on pages - some holes already starting to rip after 1 week light usage. Flipping the book fully open is not thought out very will as it damages the cover.

-1 star because:
My copy has the ink from adjacent pages on each other

Other thoughts:
It is cheaper to get this on the authors website - why ?
Older edition seems to have about 10% more trails - did they become irrelevant ?
Would be nice to have more trails mentioned as reference- even if the author was not there personally

Excellent book showing a bunch of the routes in California. The reviews of the routes gives you a good idea of what to expect, boosting your confidence about a trail before you attempt it. The waypoints and maps are very useful, along with the little side spots to check out on a trail.

I appreciate the book having a whole-of-California approach. It encourages you to visit the routes all over California.
But since California is huge, this book could be broken up into 3 separate books: Southern, Coastal, and Central/Eastern. This would allow more specificity to regions.

It's an ok book. I guess there is never enough trails to write about so I was a little disappointed not at the writer but more at the content. I guess trails are just getting harder and harder to come by. I would recommend this book for the person just trying to start out 4 wheeling.
