The Eyewitness Travel Guides are in my opinion the best ones available. It shows with pictures and illustrations the main touristic attractions of Amsterdam. The way they divide the city in areas and dedicate a chapter for each makes it very easy to browse through. The pull-out map is also a very good addition. Some people will probably say I am old fashioned because most of this information can be found on the internet very easily, but I like the way it is organized and you never run the risk of running out of battery.

I was in Amsterdam for 8 days and really used this book! Even though there is a lot to see and do there, this guide helped me make the absolute most of it. The maps in the book are really detailed and it is just fun to look at the pictures.

I own several DK books and this is also very good. It has a very nice map (you do not really need another map), has great photos, and tours of the city. I'd say Rick Steves is my favorite but DK is also a very good 2nd. I recommend it highly, would buy again, and I hope this helps someone.

Carefully planned walking tour plans with "3-D" diagrams and street maps. Arrival and orientation information important to first-time visitors are important and comprehensive parts of this guide. After nine visits to The Netherlands, I learn new info and practical facts new to me. (slow learner?).
Included are many nearby towns and info about other historic and otherwise places of significance and interest to visit.
This is a beautiful and tourist-friendly country to visit, with enough attractions to keep anyone busy traveling or touring busy for as long as you can stay.
This guide is highly recommended for all Independent visitors considering a Western European trip.
More hotel and restaurant listings would be welcome, though.
Added comment to original post: Lavishly illustrated with color photos related to the printed descriptions of the attractions.
