this book is absolutely amazing. i just spent two and a half weeks in paris {sigh...i miss it so much} and actually brought the book with me. it organizes the city by arrondisement, so basically every day i just picked a different neighborhood to explore with the book. i had been to paris before, but i found SO many hidden passageways, GORGEOUS covered galleries, tiny courtyards, and absolutely amazing shops that i had never seen before {many of which you would simply pass by without a second glance if you weren't looking for them}. plus the styling and photography are lovely. i have read countless guidebooks about paris, and janelle looks at it through a completely different (and completely beautiful) lens. highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended!

I'm not sure if this is the correct thing to do, but I feel it's the most courteous. I would like to say a sincere thank you to all those lovely readers who bought Paris: An Inspiring Tour of the City's Creative Heart. Authors don't really thank reviewers and I think they should. I always make a point of thanking the bookstores that stock and display my books around the world, and readers are no less important. In fact, they're more important, because they're the ones buying our books.

Unfortunately, one reader has picked up a few typos. I've replied -- and apologised -- to this person in a comment, and also answered a few queries they had. (Curiously, they had a few typos in their review, but it seems churlish to comment on all of them and I don't want to become embroiled in an Alain de Botton situation!) What I would like to do is apologise to all you lovely readers for the few typos. I blame jet lag. (I photographed and wrote the book in under a month, and the 24-hour flight from Australia isn't an easy one to recover from when you're frantically trying to finish writing chapters.) I do hope these small errors don't mar your enjoyment of the book.

I'm so thrilled, once again, that so many of you have taken the time to buy the book, and to write such lovely comments about it.
Thank you. I'm very grateful.

With very best wishes to all,
Janelle McCulloch

PS I've only given it 3 stars.

This is a very helpful guidebook for design shop addresses and for the author's descriptions of various old Parisian neighborhoods that have recently become "hot" locations for the new group of design boutiques that this book highlights. The presentation is stunning in both its photography and page layout. Many pages are bordered vertically by a colorful grosgrain ribbon design.

Nevertheless, the book is unfortunately marred by occasional incorrect cultural, geographical or historical information and often exhibits very sloppy proofreading efforts. For an author who writes that she spent both short and long sojourns in Paris, she and her editors at Plum and Chronicle Books did not take enough time to correct their galleys which were brimming with numerous French errors.

I would like to address examples of both content and form that are misleading or incorrect. McCulloch writes about a newspaper named La Liberté; could she be speaking instead about the left-wing daily Libération? In addition, the Église Saint-Sulpice is referred to as a cathedral (pg 62) and she makes a droguerie almost sound like a pharmacy (pg 175). McCulloch's historical explanation of how the Latin Quarter got its name is somewhat short-changed as she fails to mention that Sorbonne students actually spoke Latin among each other, reflecting the diversity of the university's student body in the 13th century. The Left Bank is characterized by her as mostly in the 6th district, but four other arrondissements border the river on the south side.

If you're going to Paris, this is the book to get. I wish I had this before my trip to Paris a few years ago.It gives a great insight on some the more creative shops and sights. I only wish she would have included a small map on each page showing the basic locations. I have a couple of maps of Paris, and could not locate some of the streets. The book is a nice quality and beautifully designed.

A friend of mine received this book as a gift.
While we were planning our trip to Paris she shared it with me and I thought it was so beautifully done that I wanted one of my own. The problem is ... There is no date of publication and other than Angelina's Tea Shop none of her shops could be found. We spent two days looking for several of them. Very frustrating
If you want a beautiful book to look at buy it ... If you want a book that will give you up to date info on Paris skip it!

I both liked and disliked this book. While I found some interesting places that I have not been to yet, at times I felt as though the author hadn't actually been to Paris, but was just repeating information found in a guide book. There are some glaring errors, some grammatical (as previously pointed out by another reviewer) some with the content. And example of this would be in the chapter on the 2nd arrondissement. She states that of the two grand department stores, Printemps and Galeries Lafayette, "Printemps is perhaps the best because it has a 360 degree view of the Paris skyline from the roof and a glorious stained glass cupola worthy of any Gothic cathedral." However it is Galeries Lafayette that has the rooftop view and the marvelous glass dome not Printemps. You certainly would be disappointed if you went looking for it in the wrong store.

She explains that she was in a rush to get the book to print, but I don't think that is any excuse for not properly editing and checking facts.

That being said, the book is visually appealing with wonderful photographs. A little more detail in the directions would be helpful though, perhaps including a small map section for each chapter. Instead she says "head over to (fill in the blank)" without really giving you concrete directions. I wouldn't recommend this book for a first time visitor to Paris, but perhaps to someone who has been there a few times, knows their way around and perhaps wants to discover some interesting places they have not been to yet.
