About the Author

Vonhof's advice comes from his own experience as well as from numerous foot experts and ultramarathoners who know what works for them. For each problem, numerous solutions are offered. There is no one best solution - different treatments work for different feet. Clear diagrams, photos, and charts demonstrate foot maladies and treatment techniques. This comprehensive resource covers the full gamut of footwear basics, prevention, and treatments. If it can happen to a foot, it's covered in this book. An avid runner and fastpacker for more than 27 years, John Vonhof treats athletes' feet during ultramarathons and adventure races. He combines the technical training of his work as a paramedic, orthopedic technician, and emergency-room technician with his passion to help athletes with their foot problems. John has travelled world-wide to train athletes, their crews, and medical personnel about proper foot-care techniques.

Plantar fasciitis laid me up for 6 weeks before I bought this book. I am skeptical about "cures in a book". What I found here is a compilation of common sense and collective knowledge regarding the health of your feet. For a runner, foot health is critical.

Having read the criticism of this book, I still ordered it. To me searching the web and tying to separate the solid info from the "stuff" is not for me. I am not willing to experiment on myself to save a buck. The author answered questions I had not thought to ask and I would never have found that information on my own. The info in this book has been vetted by the author and his sources. It has helped me establish a plan that has got me running again and that is worth a great deal to me.

The bottom line is that I found it useful for more than my PF. If you're looking for an instant cure, it doesn't exist. If you're looking for information and a number of suggestions for both prevention and cure, this book is worth considering. I am back to running with only an echo of the pain that kept me out of my running shoes for over three horrible months. I walk normally now and am able to run to recover a great deal of my condition.

Ok. It's a book about feet. I know.
But if you run, and have ever struggled with blisters, strains, or sprains - than you have to read this book. Well worth your time to learn some good foot care techniques. More attention could have been spent on foot types / shoe choice, and foot strengthening & stretches - but still a worthy read.

I picked this book up for some advice on buying new shoes and ended by reading most of the book even though I am not a runner or marathon hiker. Just an ordinary person who walks daily, does some trail hiking, occasional mountain hike -- and does not want to stop doing that. I'm approaching my 70th year and started having changes in what my feet would tolerate over the past year.

John Vonhof's book is stunningly good in my opinion. Well enough written to keep one's attention and to change one's basic attitude towards feet and foot care -- that second item is the most important part of the book. Treat your feet like you would want to be treated yourself, with the utmost care and attention to small detail, and they will serve you well -- not only on a punishing run, but also in old age (which is a bit of an endurance contest in itself, the same principles apply)

The writer seems to have a calling to look after athlete's feet, and he's done plenty of it. He puts me in mind of those unsung heroes, wartime medics who spent most of their time looking after soldier's feet.

Having suffered with my feet for the last two years and trying everything under the sun, I decided to give this book a shot off the recommendation from my brother.

Now the book did not really help me with my condition and I am still suffering through it and working on it, however it did give me a small wealth of knowledge on foot care and how to fix ailments/injuries/etc.

I would definitely recommend this book for fixing ailments from hiking, walking, running, etc, however for anything serious I would suggest reading the book and using the information to consult physiotherapist/doctor and determine a plan to get your feet back to normal.

I bought this book to help trouble shoot a specific problem that happened after getting new running shoes. The book is the experiences of many runners with differing degrees of difficulties and histories. I was able to get some simple sound advice for the immediate problem and have solutions and foresight for other issues. When you run on different surfaces or engage in other demanding activities, your feet are front and center. This guide really helps with practical experience. It is like having a best friend for your feet!

Having had many blisters from my years of backpacking, I was quite eager for some advice on how to prevent blisters from happening, and what to do about it when they do occur. Thus, with this book recommended, I eagerly plunged into its 260 pages, hoping for concrete advice that would prevent the painful foot sore from ever happening again. The advice was quite mixed. The author repeatedly (and correctly) noted that everybody is going to have a different fix. Then, he repeatedly repeats much of what he says again and again and again. This book is not intended to be read straight through like I did. Considering that its on its 5th edition, my presumption is that the author started to throw in chapters here or there, without ever re-reading the book to see what he was duplicating. About a third of the book is taken up with anecdotes by other athletes regarding their worst blister stories, or their solution to a bad blister—not terribly helpful. Vonhof's focus is on the long-distance ultra-marathon runner, including those people that run extreme races like the Death Valley run (which goes from Badwater to the summit of Mt. Whitney), or the Marathon de Sables in southern Morocco across the Sahara desert. There was very little advice for long-distance backpackers who do not have massive support teams and need to consider weight as an important variable in preventing blisters.

The book was marginally helpful, as advice acquired here was available from most backpacking books. The first several chapters offered a summary of all that was essential in the book. Subsequent sections on prevention and treatment of foot injuries of the long-distance runner, and not terribly applicable to hiking.
