From the Back Cover

The most affordable and efficient way to travel around Japan is by train with a rail pass

Japan is steeped in legend and myth, perhaps the greatest of which is the popular misconception that the country is simply too expensive to visit. The truth is that flights to Japan are cheaper than they’ve ever been, accommodation can be great value, while the warm hospitality which awaits every visitor costs nothing at all. The real secret to travelling around the country on a budget, however, is the Japan Rail Pass. With this pass you can travel on some of the fastest trains in the world as often as you like for as long as you please. Use this comprehensive guide in conjunction with a rail pass to get the most out of your trip to Japan.

  • Practical information – planning your trip; what to take; getting to Japan from Europe, North America and Australasia
  • City guides and maps – where to stay (all budgets), where to eat, what to see in 30 towns and cities; historical and cultural background
  • Kilometre-by-kilometre route guides – covering train journeys from the coast into the mountains, from temple retreat to sprawling metropolis; 34 route maps
  • Railway timetables – Bullet trains and all routes in this guidebook
  • Plus – Customs, etiquette, Japanese phrases

Also essential for me is a good folding map, the Van Dam Street Smart map, pop up of Tokyo streets and transit.

I can recommend the book especially for anyone who is planning to make a non-guided trip to Japan.

This book helped us out immensely as we took trains, subways, and buses all over Japan for two weeks. I didn't know what to expect on the trip, and I was worried we'd spend way too much of our vacation confused in train stations. This book gave me a lot of peace of mind. The overview section at the beginning was good to read before the trip to prepare. Then on the trip, this book had info on all the little details I was looking for as we pulled into each town -- where the information desk is, what specifically to ask for at the info desk, the best way to get around in the town, which tracks at the station go where, if coin lockers are available, and so on. Lonely Planet and other books have more info on sights, hotels, and restaurants, though the brief write-ups in here were good too. If you're planning on travelling to Japan and getting a JR Pass, I'd recommend a) getting this book along with another travel book b) asking for the complete shinkansen schedule at a JR office when you exchange for a JR Pass.

First of all, I was mainly looking for a book with lots of maps of the train lines, stations, and area. By a lot, I was hoping for at least 50% of the book to be images. I took a chance on getting this without being able to preview it beforehand.

Overall, it's mainly a guidebook with history, information, and important how-to's. There are some maps and train timetables, along with descriptions, and the information here is great for someone in need of a guidebook to assist in their travels. Unfortunately, I was hoping for more of a reference book for someone who's been there but wants to study getting around better. The maps for the Tokyo area could also use more love. I guess they didn't include it because you could pick those up for free, but then, isn't it handier to have it altogether?

So this book could be of great use for you, but sadly, not for me.

This book, 'Japan by Rail', is absolutely the best book I have bought for the trip to Japan.
I have read the book for some weeks when preparing the schedule for my coming journey, and the book includes lots of information for selecting the places to visit. The information is easily found geographically, just following the rail ways on the maps.
There is information enough even for several longer trips to Japan.
I can recommend the book especially for anyone who is planning to make a non-guided trip to Japan.

Japan has an amazing and incredibly efficient rail system, but it's not easy for foreigners to negotiate.

This book allowed us to travel easily and confidently on its many (and often very confusing) railways. We knew no Japanese whatsoever (other than hello and thank you) and not very many Japanese speak much English, but this book explained everything wonderfully well.

It's also a surprisingly good guidebook, at least for the places we visited ( Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya).

Highly recommended!
