I've loved the Lonely Planet series of travel guides for a long time, but find the tiered "table of contents" format in the Kindle version truly obnoxious to navigate when you're looking for specific information. I'd give the guide five stars if the publisher can resolve the issue! (That is, make section headings and sub-heading and sub-sub-headings visible in the Table of Contents section so that you can immediately select the section you'd like to go to.)

I love the layout of this travel book despite the several pounds it weighs. Lonely Planet breaks down England by region and then alphabetically by city, the exception being the huge section of London at the front just after the country highlights. The index is extremely usable, so, for example, if you're making a trip to Winchester from London and you don't know where that falls by region, you look it up and it gives you a page range as well as a bold number for where the section properly starts. From there you get a little map of the main parts of the city, a brief history and then the places most visitors are interested in. Some activities are suggested as well as places to stay and eat along with how to get there from other places. Each region section also includes a map of the general area covered. The front of the book includes the top 20 destinations/places to visit/things that people do/the country is known for. This front section is the only one in color, though the tear out map is also in color. The map itself is a bit of a let down, being just flimsy paper and likely to disintegrate if used in the rain. However, that's the only real drawback I could find with the book. Well put together with a lot of great suggestions and travel tips throughout. If you're looking to buy a more current England travel book, this would be a great option or if you just wanted something that covered a lot of ground in a useful and informative manner, this may be it. You even get info about English customs, food, and history that may be useful to know for the first time visitor.

The husband and I are planning and saving for an anniversary trip to England. I've been bookmarking and emailing links for years, but this Lonely Planet travel guide is AWESOME. As much as I love the internet and my Kindle, there are some things a real book can never replace!

I loved that the authors gave several variations of itineraries based on the time you have for your visit or what interests you, such as castles or sporting events.

And my favorite part of the book? Not only are all the important landmarks and must-do places listed (as well as what or when to avoid), but insight from locals are given as to the best view, best eats, AND Lonely Planet shares lesser known festivals and tourist attractions with you, ie: the Pooh Sticks World Championships in Little Wittenham. Really?! Awesome! Ok, you may not find that interesting unless you have young children and know what Pooh Sticks are - yes, it has to do with Winnie the Pooh! ;-)

You don't need piles of maps or pamphlets - get this book, and you'll have all the info you need to enjoy England! Super guide!

If you have an iPad or tablet, don't get this book. Content is very helpful, but it is driving me crazy. No detailed table of contents to go back and find info while you are traveling. Takes me forever to turn page by page just to find a restaurant in the part of the city I am in that day or details on sites I want to see. Unfortunate. I usually get the real book and can easily flip to the appropriate section and find information I need. Too much trouble to go through the book and bookmark everything you may need.

This is a travel book with a little bit of everything, and if your budget allows for only one book, you will likely survive your trip with this one. It covers a great deal of what you need to know to scratch the surface of all of England.

The first section is the Plan Your Trip section. It covers the 20 Top Experiences, as well as the standard things you have to know for day-to-day life in a new place. Money, travel tips, weather, etiquette; the basics are here. For interests like "Royal England" or "Art Galleries", you'll find top six (or so) lists here. Top events by month are listed, and several itineraries and walking trips cover everything from short walks to long tours. There's a short Travel with Children section, and three paragraph summaries of each region.

On the Road is the next and largest section. London and Wessex get about 90 pages each, while all the other regions get 45-65 pages each. There are maps, lists of best places to eat and stay, and sections on sights, tours, festivals & events, sleeping, eating, drinking, entertainment, and shopping. For each region there's a bit on "Why Go?" and "When to Go," and some history.

This is where all the detailed information is, and this is where I searched for many things I didn't find. I am certainly not an expert on England, yet many of my favorite things to do, pubs, restaurants, shops, and not just my favorite hotel but the whole area (with many hotels and restaurants) could not be found by searching the book or the index. You will find all the standard tourist attractions, all the celebrity chefs' restaurants, the St. Pancras Renaissance and the easyHotel, but heck if I can find the pubs that are still owned by the locals or any of my favorite unique bookstores.
