(Since AMZN seems to use the same listing for all editions of the DeLorme Pennsylvania Atlas & Gazetteer, here I am reviewing the 10th Edition.)
I am a huge fan of DeLorme's topographic atlases, which are indispensable for backroad travel and finding outdoor recreation opportunities, while the topographic detail really creates an understanding of the landscape. This latest (2007) edition for Pennsylvania indicates a switch in format, from the basic red lines for all roads to the more colorful representations of different categories of roads and easier-to-read labels for features of interest. However, something has gone seriously wrong with accuracy in this edition, and those familiar with the previous Pennsylvania editions (not to mention the state itself) will notice the problems very quickly.
DeLorme is usually diligent about the accuracy of its maps, but any sharp-eyed traveler will notice many, many errors in this edition. And strangely, most of them represent the cartographic situation several decades ago. Apparently DeLorme has reverted to direct modifications of existing USGS maps, which for many parts of Pennsylvania have not been updated by the feds for many years. Therefore, recent developments are missing for wide areas of the state. This is especially perplexing because the previous DeLorme editions for Pennsylvania were much more accurate and showed more cartographic research on then-recent developments. But the 10th edition presents a bizarre reversion to past realities, with a dismissal of DeLorme's own previous cartography.
Here are just a few examples among a great many, all of which depict information from old non-updated USGS maps.Read more ›

It's Wednesday evening. You're trying to think of something new and different to do with you weekend. Your loved one(s) are bored and restless and want to do something different. It's all up to you... What to do... If you've been there before, there is one solution - this book of great maps. In addition to the detailed accuracy of the maps, there is a great section that details locations of interest, places to go, things to do, phone numbers you can call to make arrangements and get info. This could be the book that saves your weekend! Stored in your car, it could also be the book that get's you where you want to go without driving to a gas station to get directions. If you've tried that lately, you know that your chances of getting good directions to far-off places are slim to none. I have purchased several of these books - one for each state that I frequent. Whenever I want to get away, I take them out and see what I can find. We have visited covered bridges, homes built by Frank Lloyd Wright, cliffs and caves, museums and all kinds of historic landmarks. For the price of a nice meal, you will have a travel companion for many years to come. While you can get maps on the internet, most of us still don't have that at our disposal when we are on the road. This book will be your guide!

The only maps I know of that are more detailed than this atlas are a topographical maps. If you want those for an entire state it's going to be really expensive. With this atlas and a compass there is no where in the state that you can't get to. Want to find a shorter way to get from Erie to State College, this atlas has detailed backroads. Want to find a place to go camping in PA? Check out this atlas.

I am looking at pg 85 of the 10th edition I received directly from Amazon and I see several important roads are missing labels. It seems like the town names take up more room in this edition, at the expense of street names. This is an unfortunate change. I might have to label some of these by hand now or search out an older edition - i think those were more comprehensive.

I usually find the Delorme Atalas & Gazetteers to be the most useful of maps. My old PA A&G was falling apart, so I put it in recycling and bought the newest edition. It's a bit of a disappointment. The place names are much bigger, the road lines are much thicker, and it's just generally harder to get an idea of the topography. If I wanted just a road atlas, I'd buy Rand McNally.

We bought this for a vacation trip and found we used it some, mostly as a back up to our GPS and online maps. But there's something "wrong" with the way these maps have been printed. They are not visually pleasing and are, in fact, hard to read--not up to the usual DeLorme standard--or my eyes are getting bad--or both. A magnifying glass might help, but I'm not sure it's just size of print. I think it's fonts, colors, etc. In the area we used (basically only one county) we found the maps accurate and complete and they did occasionally prove useful because of the level of detail.

I was hoping this would be as excellent as the Maine Gazeteer, but it isn't. It is a topographical map, which is fine if all you want to do is hike mountains. But if you want street names and town names better grab a magnifying glass. Tiny print and roads drawn in pastel colors is not really helpful. Disappointing.
