From the Inside Flap

He who does not know foreign languages does not know anything about his own.
                                                              -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, Second Edition, is a uniquely comprehensive, integrated, and engaging review book that will provide learners with the solid knowledge needed to increase their confidence in using Spanish to express their own thoughts, to comprehend those of Spanish speakers, and to communicate in both speaking and writing in a wide variety of situations.

Designed to provide advanced beginners, intermediate students, and advanced learners of Spanish with a powerful tool for review and progress in the language, this book presents clear, concise, and well-organized grammar explanations with examples that reflect every day usage, most often in the form of conversational exchanges. The presentations of structure are easy to understand, and the examples will encourage learners to see the study of grammar as a stepping stone to communication.

We have expanded and enhanced the exercises to give you even more practice. The exercises provide extensive practice for all the grammar topics that learners of Spanish at this level should know. These engaging exercises are contextualized, and the instructions in Spanish help set the scene and prepare you for the task at hand. Vocabulary lists provide a review of the vocabulary common to most first- and second-year Spanish textbooks, as well as new words and phrases essential for particular exercises, thus increasing your vocabulary and enhancing your ability to express yourself on a variety of topics. Vocabulary presentations are grouped by topic and are integrated with the exercises. Exercises reflect authentic, everyday language usage and touch on all areas of modern life, including business and technology.

Many self-expression exercises are included to encourage you to use the target grammar and vocabulary presented to express your own ideas. The Ejercicio oral at the end of each chapter of Parts I through III is a culminating exercise in which you and a friend or colleague can practice the grammatical structures and topics presented in the chapter by exchanging information with each other.

The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, Second Edition, has 28 chapters divided into four parts.
I    Verbs - Forms and Uses
II   Nouns and Their Modifiers; Pronouns
III  Other Elements of the Sentence
IV  Idiomatic Usage

Notas culturales are featured throughout the book. These cultural notes enhance the effectiveness of the grammar exercises by providing an authentic Hispanic context in which to practice. To further your progress, we have also included a chapter of important idioms and proverbs (Chapter 26), a chapter on word formation, and a chapter that aims to help you eliminate some of the most common errors made by English-speaking learners of Spanish: ¡Ojo! Common Errors and Pitfalls (Chapter 28).

For convenient learner reference, the appendices of The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, Second Edition, include easy-to-read verb charts. Also included in the appendices is a section on written conventions, which explains Spanish rules of spelling, punctuation, and stress. The Answer Key provided at the end of the book allows you to check your work.

The CD-ROM component of The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, Second Edition, contains hundreds of multiple-choice exercises that allow you to practice the tenses, grammatical structures, and idiomatic usage included in the four parts of the book. The Diagnostic Test and Review Test provide you with an excellent tool to assess your progress. To aid you in your comprehension and pronunciation, Listening for Key Contrasts drills help you distinguish verb endings that may sound similar to English speakers but are very different in meaning. This section targets some of the most important sound contrasts in the Spanish verb system. The Audio Modules, recorded by native speakers of Spanish, present dialogues and narratives designed to improve your listening comprehension and pronunciation. Preceding each audio passage is a list of Ten Key Words and Expressions for listening and repeating that helps you prepare for listening to the passage. After listening to and repeating the audio passage, you will do exercises to test your comprehension. You can read a Transcription of the audio passage as you listen to the passage a second time. A Glossary of words and expressions can be activated to check meaning, and you can highlight words in the audio passage to view definitions in English.

The Audio Modules present delightful, authentic scenes with real people who talk about their families, work, travels, and life goals in settings and with stories that reflect our daily lives - buying a house, business and the office, remodeling a home, love, problems at the airport, owning a restaurant, family problems, career changes, conversing on the telephone, shopping, and others. The passages contain useful, authentic vocabulary that will serve you well in your communication with native speakers of Spanish. You will be amazed at how much you will understand and be able to say after you have worked through the CD-ROM!

The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, Second Edition, retains the highly effective pedagogy and most important features that made the first edition so popular and successful with users. It is ideal for learners working on their own and as an ancillary for students using a textbook in a classroom setting. Chapters may be covered in any order, allowing learners and teachers to individualize grammar practice.

IMPORTANT:

Since my original review I discovered that the Kindle version of this book has hundreds of pieces of material missing, due to formatting errors. You can search the document for the word "image" to see where all the missing pieces should be.

The paperback is fantastic. The Kindle edition is badly defective. Hopefully it will be fixed someday.

MY ORIGINAL REVIEW (still true of the paperback):

I have been teaching Spanish and French for over 15 years. I own many, many Spanish textbooks and write curriculum for language learners.

This book is excellent! I use it as a textbook for classes at several levels of proficiency. I buy copies by the carton now.

This book is well-written and carefully edited. So many popular textbooks I have tried to use have typos, obvious grammatical errors and even non-existent words. My native-speaker employees have also found that many Spanish textbooks contain very non-native language. This book, by contrast, is a reliable model for students.

This book is
* trustworthy in the quality of information it provides
* reasonably priced
* thorough in its coverage of the Spanish language
* well-organized
* clearly-written
* an excellent resource for teachers and tutors

Buy this book. Later, you will be proud of how wisely you chose. And you'll congratulate yourself in perfect Spanish.

I'm Natalia Vélez, Spanish instructor from eLearnSpanishOnline where I give free video Spanish lessons using my very own immersion method and also free podcast Spanish lessons. This review covers a previous version of the book that does not include the CD-Rom. Although the authors of this book claim that this book is a review book for intermediate through advanced learners of Spanish, I also recommend this book for beginner students. That's because this book also covers beginner topics such as the Present Tense and Ser vs. Estar.

This book does a great job of providing the reader with clear, concise, and well-organized grammar explanations. In addition to detailed explanations, this book also gives the student lots of exercises to do in order to make sure that the material in the book is well understood and absorbed.

One helpful feature of this book is the "Vocabulary Boxes." The Vocabulary Boxes cover a lot of vocabulary words that beginner to intermediate students should be familiar with. And the Vocabulary Boxes also cover some words that more advanced students will find helpful in order to improve communication and express themselves in a variety of situations.

One of my favorite topics in this book are the "Notas Culturales." The "Notas Culturales" help break the monotony of studying just Spanish grammar and vocabulary and provides the student with a bit of culture from the Spanish speaking world.

Another very interesting topic of this book is the chapter on Idioms, Expressions and Proverbs. There is one chapter of this book that I am sure that Americans and other English speakers will find helpful and that is the chapter called "Common Errors and Pitfalls.

I had been using the terrific book The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice: Mastering Spanish Grammar for Confident Communication to brush up on my Spanish when the The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, CD Edition came on the market. I made great progress studying Spanish grammar and practicing it in the exercises in the book, but with the supplementary audio exercises on the two CDs I was also able to practice my skills of understanding and speaking. I like the format of the interactive audio exercises and greatly appreciate the English explanations and model sentences. Unlike other audio programs I've tried, this one gives me plenty of time to respond before the correct answer is heard. I like to do the audio drills without looking at the listening guide, but it's reassuring to know that if I don't understand something I hear I can look it up. The dictations are very helpful to me too.

The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice book and CDs are easy to use together because the book and audio listening guide are coordinated so that chapter and page numbers match up. I know my skills have improved using them, and I feel much more confident about using Spanish in the workplace, with my friends, and when I travel.

Format: Audio CD
This might have been a good CD set. At least the corresponding book is good, as far as I can tell. But the sound on the CD's is such that I have trouble recognizing familar Spanish words. Unfamilar words are beyond my hope for recognition. Listening has the general effect of trying to read words printed in runny ink. Oddly, the English-speaking announcer is relatively clear. It is possible that this recording was done on very old equipment. It is also possible that a sound engineer turned the bass way up and the treble way down, thus masking the features of speech which might have made it understandable. I believe this is the case since the woman speaker's voice seems to have more bass boom than the man's. Most regrettable. On the good side, there is a minimum of the annoying musical "bookends" which I sometimes find on similar productions. But since the language content is useless to me, that's a very weak plus. If you have fairly sophisticated sound-shaping, like a graphic equalizer, or if you have a CD player which produces no bass notes to speak of, then this package might be more useable to you than to me.
