Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Former museum docent and teacher Korrell has crafted an in-depth and interactive guide to the nation’s most iconic museum system. This manual encompasses three of the Smithsonian Institute’s most frequently visited sites: the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American History, and the National Museum of Natural History. Included are general do’s and don’ts for the museums, checklists of major highlights, and annotated floor plans. This book is a must-read for families headed to the museums, as it both maximizes visitors’ time spent in the facilities and serves as a great memento—especially since readers are encouraged to journal and record their impressions of major exhibits along the way. While intended for use in conjunction with a site visit, kids not headed to Washington will find value in reading about the Smithsonian’s hallmark exhibits, such as the First Ladies’ inaugural gowns, the Wright Brothers’ airplane, and the Hall of Mammals. A dynamic layout will foster boundless interest for museum visitors and casual readers alike. Grades 4-7. --Erin Anderson

KIRKUS REVIEWS

The Smithsonian—it isn’t just rocket science.

This spiral-bound guide is a modestly hefty piece of work, but that is due to the fact that we often forget that the Smithsonian isn’t just where they store the Spirit of Saint Louis and the lunar module. It is also home of the national museums of natural history and American history, as well as the air and space museum. And the collections are, in a word, spectacular. Korrell has a good mix going, with plenty of archival and contemporary photographs and illustrations accompanied by punchy text. Both Korrell and museum professionals have contributed the latter, with only a little oversimplification—“Geology is about understanding what we see around us.” It is predominantly straightforward—a good combination of earnest and bouncy—with bracing touches of humor: “Robotic spacecraft aren’t as particular as human space explorers…they do what they are asked to do without grumbling.” Always, Korrell keeps readers engaged with some simple quizzes—you can write right in the “guide”—and hide-and-seek games that challenge readers to find various objects somewhere in the rooms, as well as other activities.

A serious introduction to the national museums that does not take itself too seriously. (Nonfiction. 8-12)

FOREWORD

The "M" word (museum) never had a bad connotation in our house, and that is probably because access to incredible museums was somewhat limited in Northern Michigan. Our visits to museums were usually wrapped up in a vacation, and we started our kids early beginning with The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, followed quickly by the big fish tank in Chicago. The Smithsonian was done in doses due to its sheer size, and boy I wish we had access to this hands-on book for kids in advance. Parents will find this fun, four-color, interactive guide and workbook a great introduction to the three most visited: the National Air & Space, Natural History, and American History museums. Interviews, quizzes, games and journal pages along with 450 photos and illustrations.

I ordered this book for our 10 year old son to get him fired up for our spring break trip to Washington, DC. What a cool book it is! We've tagged the things we all want to see, plus there are plenty of places to write in your own answer to questions on a variety of topics. It's going to be great in the car on the way. I definitely recommend it!

Not only do my kids love it so do I! The Smithsonian museums can be so overwhelming and this book nicely broke down 3 of the museums into bite size pieces if you will. Plus the maps of the museums are very helpful. My 10 year daughter is so excited to see the big dollhouse and the First Ladies' dresses at the Museum of American History and my 12 year old son has even been caught flipping through the pages as well!

This is an exceptional book! I give it 5 stars easily - not just an exceptional guide to the Smithsonian, but also an exceptional resource to the history contained within the National Air and Space Museum, The National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of American History. Additionally, it is PACKED with activities kids can do at home before or after visiting the museums -- or without visiting the museums at all -- for example: great sections on building various paper airplanes, experimenting with timing their flight times to improve flight, etc., building a home rock collection, studying insects in one's backyard, etc. Awesome!
With regards to these three museums themselves, this book will be a great primer prior to visiting the museum and is full of activities to keep kids engaged (as if they need them :)) while at the museums themselves. Love the smart phone apps to link to additional info should one want additional info. The write-in/draw-in areas are great for building memories and committing what is being learned to memory. The interviews with specialists in their fields are fascinating and well done... Wish I'd had this book before I first visited the Smithsonian (as a college student!)... and it makes me VERY excited to go back with my daughter! Great work!!!

My daughter, aged 10, jumped for joy when she saw this book, and read it from the time she got home til time for bed, with only a brief stop for dinner. She says it is really good. I asked in what ways is it so good? She said "I don't know, it is just so INTERESTING!" And she kept reading.

We got this book the day it was published, because we know "Miss Emily" Korrell, and we adore her. So, I thought perhaps my daughter's interest came from her involvement with Emily, from having gotten to write sticky note comments on editorial layouts over the summer, help think up astronaut interview questions in class, etc. But, it seems that no, this is actually a great book!

One comment my daughter did finally offer is that the included maps show things you would actually really want to know where they are, like the "Lost and Found", the cafeterias, and the rest rooms. Heading towards bed, she asked, "Mom what are Simulators?" Looking myself at Awesome Adventures now, I see she must have been studying the MAP KEY for the Air and Space Museum. The symbol for "Simulators" is right in there along with "Tickets" and "Water Fountain".

I look forward to visiting the Smithsonian in person again. I'm imagining my daughter will be guiding ME, enriching the visit like ... "MOM, did you know this whale is a model of an actual whale named Phoenix? She is a Right Whale, and lives in um ... I think the Atlantic Ocean! Did you know whales have unique patterns of callosities? Yep, here it is on the sign (smile). MOM? Those scars and whiskers are patterned after Phoenix's real ones. ... WOW, they really did a great job, did you know it took 4 years to make? ... And LOOK, there is the replica of her belly button! That was in the book, too (smile).

This is a must have if you are visiting the Smithsonian Museums in DC!! I ordered this book from Amazon so that my 8 year-old daughter and I could have a little knowledge before our vacation. It has many activities to work through and a lot of really neat facts about all of the Smithsonian museums. Most of the activities seem to apply more to your visit at the museums but it was nice to do some reading before we got there. They do have the guide available in the souvenir stores (or at least I saw it at the Natural History Museum) but I enjoyed having it earlier so that we were somewhat familiar with what we were going to be encountering.

I feel like my daughter was really engaged with the museums because she had something to relate things to. It is often challenging to keep kids entertained at museums for an extended length of time and this was the perfect activity for her interest. She really enjoyed the guide and I loved how involved she wanted to be.

I will say, that if you are wanting to use this book during your trip, you really need a full day at each museum. The activities are super fun but they do require time to get through them. The size of each museum is quite intimidating and I loved that this guide gave us some direction in approaching our visits. It is also nice because she could reflect on her day later that night at the hotel to finish up the activities and reflections pages.
