About the Author

Kurt Koontz was born and raised in Boise, Idaho.  At the age of 36, he retired from a sales executive career at a Fortune 500 company.  For the past decade, his travels have taken him to all corners of the world.  These adventures are off the beaten path and usually involve physical and mental endurance. In September of 2012, he walked 500 miles on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. The journey was a life changing experience and he decided to write his first book to share the experience.

More About the Author

After retiring early from his job as a successful sales executive for a Fortune 500 technology company, Kurt Koontz volunteered in his community and traveled across Europe and North America. He never considered writing a book until he walked nearly 500 miles across Spain in 2012. Those million steps were so compelling that he returned home and began writing and speaking about his life-changing adventures. He lives and writes on a tree-lined creek in Boise, Idaho.

For anyone planning to walk to Camino -or even if you dream of doing so-, this is an engaging read. I was hooked from the first words. Loved reading about Kurt's insights and lessons learned along the way- the people, the scenery- just enough detail without becoming boring. Doesn't contain lists of what to take, etc but there are plenty of books with that. This was about how the walk changes you. Loved it!

Yes, it has a lot of helpful inside information about the Camino. Yes, it draws a great picture of the experience. Yes, it has some historical background of the history you'll be strolling by. But for me, it spoke more to the emotional/spiritual journey.
I'm a middle aged man facing a lot of the same struggles: fatigue, winds, rain, inclines, descents, declines, addiction, inability to enjoy the now, little time to take a breath, engage, get to know people. I feel like I've got my compass back.

The best book I have read on walking the Camino de Santiago. I could not put it down and will be reading it again prior to my own walk on the Camino in 2014. Mr. Koontz completely captures his physical and spiritual journey and writes about it with simplicity and clarity. This is not a day-to-day journal as are so many other books on this topic, but rather an engaging discussion of his journey arranged by perfectly selected topics. A must read for anyone planning to walk the Camino.

Okay, I'll admit that I'm a bit of a book snob. As my tastes tend to run toward British classical literature, I wasn't sure if One Million Steps would be my "cup of tea." But because it was a gift from a friend, I decided to give it a try. I wasn't prepared to find what I found -- a page turner that I ended up reading in one sitting! I didn't expect to feel the need to suppress giggles and outright belly laughs at the antics of the pilgrims on the El Camino. And I certainly didn't expect to weep at the sometimes painful life stories shared by Kurt Koontz. One Million Steps is so much more than an account of Koontz' journey walking the El Camino. It is poignant, expressive, funny story and an excellent read. Do yourself a favor and purchase this book! No matter what your tastes, One Million Steps will take you on a ride you won't soon forget!

I have done part of the Camino but not all of it, so I was interested in reading about someone's experience in doing the whole walk. This book does not disappoint. From the first few lines the reader is hooked. I personally could not put it down for two days! Kurt provides the reader with insights into why he was walking, and what he hoped to achieve by doing the Way. As the writer traverses northern Spain the reader is drawn in to walk alongside him, meeting the different people, all the different nationalities and characters, people who are individuals yet at the same time resembling people we as fellow walkers have all met. We hear about the food, the lodgings, the scenery, and, most importantly, the cameraderie. Kurt captures the atmosphere and friendship of fellow walkers, saying goodbye to them, only to meet them again and again along the Way. This aspect is very typical of life on other long-distance paths in Europe and the US. We even get a picture of the aches and pains of the walkers, hence the need to have the most comfortable shoes. We come to understand and appreciate the importance of the hiking stick, which in Kurt's case is personalized with its own name. Kurt discusses not just the day-to-day happenings along the Way but also some of his own personal insights and realizations. By the end of the book it is clear that the Camino has changed him, as it has the millions of others who have walked it over the centuries. Anyone contemplating walking the Camino should read this book, and, as for anyone who is not contemplating doing the Camino, they will be when they have read the book!

I am writing this review for my mom. I bought this book for her because I have the prime shipping and can get it quick.

Since she has received it she has loved it and recomends it to all. In fact she wont stop bugging me to write this reveiw to tell how terrific this book is and how much she loves it. She would give it ten stars if it would let her.

I truly enjoyed this book! I found it to be a story of making friends and learning about the mindset of a person who is searching for more than just a get away from the every day things in life. You get to meet the people he met and you get to follow his heart as he deals with more than just a few aches and pains in his bones. It is funny, heartwarming and very interesting. It's not just a story about the walk of a lifetime, it's about the change and finding of ones self in each and every step. I highly recommend it.

I admire the author for his project, but he badly needed an editor to remove cliched writing and to add depth.
