Review

This is the ideal book for both planning a trip and getting the most out of your holiday while you are there: it's informative, opinionated and supremely wise The Mail on Sunday --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

As is the case with all DK Eyewitness travel books, the photographs are gorgeous and plentiful.

I looked through dozens of travel books about Ireland at the bookstore and this one was by far my favorite. I promptly ordered it off Amazon that night (since it was $10 cheaper than at the bookstore) and got it in a couple days. It's fantastic! It's a great drive-and-sightsee kind of book, perfect for our trip. My friends and I are leaving in a couple months and want to plan ahead for our trip, but unfortunately we only get to spend a week there. Most of the drives are 2-3 days long and include places to stay, but each section also has a "day trip" list of the top things on that drive.

The book also has great descriptions of the rules of the road in Ireland as well as a basic driving guide and street sign page. Absolutely a must-buy if you're planning on driving around Ireland to sightsee!

This is a book for the unconventional tourist. If you enjoy getting to know a place very well, enjoy landscapes, and enjoy great accommodation, this book gets you there. But pair with a more detailed driving map, because you'll want to get even further back road than the included map here can get you. Also pair it with a hiking or walking map of the areas you'll be visiting if you like that sort of thing. This book is perfect for getting you to places where you'll be really pulling to get out of the car and into the landscape.

We've been to Ireland several times, but never spent much time in Connemara and Donegal. We needed a plan to explore these diverse and beautiful areas on our own for 2 weeks this summer and this book has some wonderful ideas. It's very helpful that they give you a time line for each trip. We tend to double the estimates because we love to poke around and stop for hours to take pictures, but it's great to have a reference time for planning.

On a whim we decided to go to Ireland for 5 days. I had only 10 days advance notice, so I immediately jumped onto Amazon to purchase my go-to travel guides (Fodor's and Lonely Planet.) They were invaluable in helping me decide quickly which areas of Ireland interested me the most. However, I didn't want a tour of Ireland. I wanted to really see Ireland. I wanted to be away from the hustle and bustle of the tour buses and meet the true locals. Back Roads Ireland did that for me. I was able look at the drives that were in the general areas we had decided to go, and pick out smaller towns off the beaten track. We did 4 different areas of Ireland in 5 days and this book really made a difference for us. I highly recommend it to all.

This book (like a few other comparably-themed books) is a "driving tour" approach to Ireland travel. The book is very useful for folks who have realized that there was no way to see all of Ireland in a single trip. Then comes the decision of what to see and how to do it most efficiently. By illustrating some regionally-clustered driving tours, this book presents some options for arranging a less hectic but still satisfying visit. It helped us design a trip that would involve less overall driving and more overall sight-seeing. There is a great detachable roadmap in the back, although I still purchased both the AA and OSi atlases. As is the case with all DK Eyewitness travel books, the photographs are gorgeous and plentiful. Whether or not I should, I tend to pay more attention to Tripadvisor reviews of hotels, B&Bs, and restaurants than those in any travel book. Plus we haven't yet actually made our trip, so I can't comment on the usefulness of the hotel and restaurant reviews.

DK books never fail me. I love the quality of the book from the durable glossy cover, the glossy pages, vibrant colors, and organized info. I planned my entire drive trip to Ireland with the book. I'm building my own trip so I had to do PLENTY of research ahead of time and this book is a great guide on how to plan and maximize your time in an area. I love the tips on where to stay, the must sees, and the details on what each town is popular. I normally do not bring travel books with me during my travel because they are just bulky and heavy, but since I am driving all over Ireland, I may just bring this with me. Full folded map included. And this edition has current info on lodging!! a great plus

In Ireland is it well known that they lack signage, so I found the book to be very helpful by having detailed directions to sites. When the map failed us I pulled out this book and it took us to the site.

My wife and I recently took a 7 day road trip through Ireland, we thought this book would the best travel companion out of our 3 travel guides. Once the trip began, we found a few areas the book fell short. While this book provides good information on sights and road signs, it does not provide any alternative routes, time tables, or must see sights/ vistas/ restaurants on the drives the book suggests. I feel this travel guide falls short of its description of focusing on road trip traveling.
