Diane Susan Petty was born in Toronto, Canada where she made the grave mistake of getting a useless law degree instead of going to journalism school. She moved to the Bay Area in 1995, and, after wreaking havoc on the US economy for many years as a mortgage banker, decided she wanted a more meaningful life.Naturally, she became a travel writer. She has written several stories for the San Francisco Chronicle and other outlets, as well as working part-time for United Airlines. She spends as much time as possible traveling the world on a very modest budget with her wonderful husband and two children. She resides in a suburb of San Francisco.
I rated this book 5 stars because it led me and my family through San Francisco to the must-see sites as well as the hidden gems of that beautiful city! I can't wait to use it again on my next trip out there.

For the first time. This book seems perfect. Basic info, good maps. History of the city. I highly recommend this series of books for travel. Light weight and perfect price.

I've typically always liked Frommer's travel guides - the SF version was no exception. Very well organized with great personal insights & suggestions.
I had the kindle version for my paperwhite - which made it a little difficult to quickly find things. But that's just my issue - overall an excellent guide for first time visitors

I purchased the Kindle version of this book. The information was helpful, and well laid out. In fact, the tips regarding the Chinatown walking tour, and free city walking tours were really great - as well as the tips regarding getting around, and various restaurant recommendations.
However, over all, the gook was too condensed / summarized for my needs. While the book provided it's list of favorites (Restaurants, Activities, Hotels, etc.), it didn't contain a comprehensive list of these things, so that I could easily compare or find the best Hotel or Restaurant, Tour, etc, based on my needs.
I was somewhat limited in my choices to my desire to purchase a Kindle-based guide book, but if I do it over again, I would have purchased a more detailed guide.

Some info was very misleading. Definitely do not take the transport shuttles from the airport. We were taken all over town before being delivered to our hotel. The charge was $34 for 2 people. We took a cab back to the airport and the charge was $40. Much less hassle and more convenient.
Cable cars were Ok for a one time ride. To get on the cable car to return from Fisherman's wharf took almost 2 hours and we were not at high tourist time. Ride it once then find other transportation. Not enough info in the book regarding alternate transportation.

I had never been to San Francisco before but I felt right at home with this guide book. I really like it. Even when we went to remote the Muir forest it had suggestions for where to eat lunch. I would reccomend it.
