About the Author

Sheryl Sandberg is chief operating officer at Facebook. Prior to joining Facebook, she was vice president of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google and chief of staff at the United States Treasury Department. She lives in Northern California with her husband and their two children.

This book is good. But it is also confusing and depressing.

Its emphasis is on internalized oppression, the messages women carry in their heads about what they can't allow themselves to do. This is the good part.

The confusing part is that there are mixed messages about how to get along at work: on the one hand, speak up and raise your hand and sit at the table and negotiate for higher pay. On the other hand, smile a lot and say "we" instead of "I." Successful, ambitious women are not likable, the research shows, so go out of your way to be likable. (BTW, if you were a man, everybody would like you for being successful and ambitious.

The depressing part is that there is a graphic rape story added at the end in the appendix of stories by women other than Sandberg. I am not sure why she added this. A woman was in her own home, apparently with her toddler and her dogs, and a stranger broke in, tied her up, and raped her at gunpoint. The "empowerment" part was that she and her husband decided to prosecute the rapist rather than remain silent. Who wouldn't?! It wasn't a date rape or a rape by your old demented uncle; it was a stranger! Apparently they succeeded and he went to jail. Again, I'm not sure why this story is in this book. The story is wildly enraging and depressing, and there is little empowerment in it. Fine, he went to jail. But she will suffer for the rest of her life with the traumatic memory of that day. She hints that they had to move because she couldn't stand to live in her own home any more.

As a 40 something who has learned so much from Lean In and Sheryl's insights (which ring true from a twenty year career), I am thrilled to see this next book focused on the next generation - for young women and men.

Lean In for Graduates by Sheryl Sandberg is filled with solid advice and inspiration for those embarking on what has long been viewed as their future, fueled by passion and years of preparation. While always a timely topic, I think the perfect moment for this book is now, especially as many graduates are being resourceful, exploring new possibilities, making their way forward. I purchased this book for a special graduate because I believe she will benefit from Sheryl Sandberg's insightful wisdom.
