I purchased this book for a friend, but had a chance to flip through it before I wrapped it. Wish I had one of my own! I'm pretty old-school, so begin able to have a tactile experience with this comprehensive atlas made it so much more satisfying that searching for the same information on the Internet. By flipping through the pages, I came across places I'd never search for, but glad that I had the chance to see.

I bought the atlas for maps, not primer in earth science. It is heavy, unwieldy and puts too much emphasis on space photos and relief maps. Rand-McNally did a better job with their Reader's Atlas in 1950. I am disappointed. Too much extraneous matter and too few detailed maps. Why doesn't someone publish a Readers Atlas modeled on the one mentioned above. I don't mean a Road Atlas. just an up-to-date detailed set of geographic maps.

Bought this as a coffee table book and for general, occasional reading. It's absolutely thorough, all the maps are extremely detailed and a huge index that won't miss anything you look for. Mighty impressed with the hard-binding and paper quality, totally worth its weight for the price. Best of all are the satellite images and tidbits of select cities. I'm a satisfied buyer.

Unbelievable the amount of info contained in this atlas. Just about anything you want to know about the geography of the world is in this book. Even the physical quality is five star, extremely high quality. Highly recommend it.

This is not the best of Oxford. Get the bigger ones or even the Pocket Atlas. This one crops countries around the edges of maps badly, leaving the populated areas and cutting off parts too far north or south or too deserted areas. The pocket atlas is almost better in giving a fair and balanced view of the world.
For a book about this size, DK, National geographic and Collins have better products if size and weight are your criteria for picking an atlas.

The big problem with this atlas is the way the relief is portrayed. Especially high mountains-Kenya for example-the relief is so dark that you cannot possibly read the other printed matter such as the names of cities, rivers, mountain peaks, etc. Save your money and get something you can see like National Geographic.
