Series: National Geographic Traveler
Paperback: 400 pages
Publisher: National Geographic; 5 edition (January 7, 2014)
ROFF SMITH has lived most of his adult life in Australia, beginning as a journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald and later as a feature writer for Melbourne's Sunday Age. He joined Time in 1993, and as an award-winning senior writer he covered stories around Australia and as far afield as New Guinea, French Polynesia, and Antarctica. In 1996, Roff set off alone into the Australian Outback on a 10,000-mile bicycle trek. The story of his journey appeared as a three-part series in National Geographic and is described in more detail in Cold Beer and Crocodiles: A Bicycle Journey into Australia and Australia: Journey Through a Timeless Land.
AUSTRALIA by Roff Smith is a 399 page guidebook in the National Geographic Traveller series. The book is printed on glossy paper, and essentially every page has a color photograph, color map, or detailed multi-colored drawing. There are ten color-coded chapters: (1) History and culture; (2) Sidney; (3) New South Wales; (4) Australian Capital Territory; (5) Queensland; (6) Northern Territory; (7) Western Australia; (8) Southern Australia; (9) Victoria; and (10) Tasmania.
DRAWINGS. The drawings include a 2-page description of SYDNEY HARBOR BRIDGE, built in 1932 (pages 80-81), SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE (pages 86-87), and a colorful drawing of a coral reef with a legend indicating brain coral, turbinaria frodeus, mushroom coral, pectinia lactuca, gorgonian fan coral, volute, and other benthic creatures (pages 156-157).
PHOTOGRAPHS. The more unique photos are as follows. Animal photos include koalas (pages 8, 125, 271); kangaroos (p. 68, 269); Tasmanian devil (p. 329). Photos of aborigines and of their art appear on pages 11, 22, 57, 202, 209. Photographs of corals, fish, sharks, giant turtles, and huge molluscs are found on pages 12, 71, 92, 137, 154, 158, 163, 228, and 230. Photos of natural wonders in the landscape include ULURA sandstone mountains (p. 26, 204, 207); WALLS OF CHINA in Mungo National Park (page 29, this resembles Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park in the U.S.); BOAB TREE (page 66); LORD HOWE ISLAND (a volcanic island with hiking trails resembling Kalalau Trail on Kauai (pages 122, 126); rainforest in DAINTREE NATIONAL PARK (p. 169); double waterfall in KAKADU NATIONAL PARK (p. 172); wall of watarrka (page 210), seastacks called TWELVE APOSTLES (page 313).
In full disclosure, I've not used this on a trip to Australia. I am using it as a planning tool. I very much like the history, culture and arts sections. Also like how it is divided by Australia's individual territories. The information is fairly general in nature. Most of the main attractions are listed along with a few "out of the way" ideas. I've checked a few things with a friend that lives in Australia and he indicated it is pretty accurate. Not a book for detailed planning, but for general ideas and what you will find in each of the states, it does a pretty good job. I'm not sure this is the travel guide I'll take when I actually go, I believe I'll look for one with much more detail. Also, lacking in rail travel information, which is important to me. A good general planner, not a detailed one.

When a book says that it will take you to places "off the beaten path" I would expect that one of the oldest living fossils would be on that list. Yes, this is all about Stromatolites. How National Geographic could leave that out doesn't make any sense. It shows that their version of "off the beaten path" still only includes places that are easy to get to. Yes, there is that great four wheel drive to nowhere. Yes, there are mentions of all the places that I would visit. BUT....to leave out one of the true wonders of the World....sorry, NatGeo, you blew this one. Overall, a good book to have in your hands, takes you to good places, and when you don't have cell service, a book is a beautiful thing. So, overall, I would give this four stars, but they forgot a doozy, so three stars it is. A decent deal.

Not nearly as comprehensive as the Moon Handbooks or even the Let's Go Series but is comparable to Lonely Planet. My biggest disappointment is that, for National Geographic I had greater expectations for the photos and illustrations. Sure these are in here but there is nothing in their quality that sets them apart from other travel guides, and for those of us that grew up with National Geographic magazines we're accustomed to images that blow us away.

I have slept on five continents. Only two have escaped me:the two I most desired to visit: Antarctica and Australia.
Nonetheless, I have hoarded books regarding Australia even more so than books a about Egypt, Libya, and Southern Africa, where I have resided as an American expat. Why do I ramble on so about this?
To make the point that I have a wide array of books on Australia. Yet, insofar as my travel books, I have decided that National Geographic Traveler: Australia, 5th Edition by Roff Martin Smith is the best tourist guide I have found for Australia.
The opening section, Charting Your Trip highlights places to go depending on the planned length of your stay and includes a color-codec index to places NOT TO BE MISSED that is quite useful and convenient.
As with any National Geographic publication, this book has scores of outstanding photographs, but the best among them are those that give you a 'you are there' feel in the local shopping districts. (Wish my travel photos were only half as good).
Still, most of the above comments could be stated about any of a score of other travel books. So, what makes National Geographic Traveler: Australia the best of the best?
Roff Martin Smith has stuffed this book of nearly 400 pages with insights on 'experiences' readers may take interest in, such as a brief overview on where to surf according to desires of the readers (pg 315) . Or, for readers enthralled by The Man From Snowy River, they can find fun experiencing Australia on horseback, (pg 115).
Also, spread throughout this terrific guide are walking & driving tours, Excursions Off the Beaten Path and each chapter includes lists of sights Not-To-Be-Missed.Read more ›
