About the Author
In more than 50 years of mountaineering, Gerry Roach has climbed in dozens of states and countries, including 12 Alaskan expeditions, 10 Andean expeditions, and 7 Himalayan expeditions. After climbing Mt. Everest, he became the second person to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents. Closer to home, Roach has climbed more than 1,200 named peaks in Colorado, including all the fourteeners, which he completed for the first time in 1975. Roach lives in Boulder, Colorado, with his wife and climbing partner, Jennifer Roach.

Hiked all of the 14'ers at least once (half of them at least twice) from 2001-2005 when I lived in CO using the 2nd edition of this book and accompanying maps. Absolutely a must - I wouldn't have (and, with my sense of direction - or lack of the same) couldn't have done it without the book. Excellent maps and trail descriptions. Especially valuable when I first got "hooked" on 14'ers by giving me a lot more confidence that I could actually complete an easy peak (started with Gray/Torreys), was essential for the more remote, challenging and relatively less traveled peaks. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I like the book because it covers all the major and minor routes up 14er's. Although I would not climb some of the more challenging routes, it is interesting to read about them. I was also impressed with the descriptions of difficulty in various seasons. It is very complete, although each route is described only briefly. The 14er's web site contains better information to keep you from getting lost on the climbs.

This is the ultimate guide, giving all the routes and options. Others just cover the favorite or most common route. Would not recommend taking on these mountains without this as a resource.

I bought this book because of reviews that I read and it did not disappoint. Even though I am not a hard core hiker and most likely will not even attempt to climb all the 14ers here in Colorado, I do like this book. It gives plenty of detail on the many different approaches to the different trail heads. The maps are very accurate and easy to follow.
I have done 6 of the 14ers so far with plans to do a few each year and see how it goes. I imagine this book will be well worn by the time I am done with it!

We have the earlier versions that came with maps that you could take on the trail with you, this edition does not have those, and they need to be purchased separately for updates and changes.

This book is considered "The Bible" for climbing Colorado Fourteeners. It's incredibly accurate, well written and complete. It's a must even if you don't climb, just hike or 4-Wheel.

If you plan on climbing just one 14'er or all of them, Gerry Roach will get you there safely. His entertaining and endearing writing style and amazing attention to detail separate this book from the pack of most hiking guides. I'd recommend any of his other books as well. Gerry is one of a kind- the best!
