Review

'The city is never as charming as when its edifices are captured by illustrator James Gulliver Hancock" ~Manhattan Users Guide

"Sometimes it requires an out-of-town guest to get a native New Yorker to take a fresh look at all the architecture-landmark and otherwise- in our midst...His obsession might save you some shoe leather, or inspire you to burn some." ~New York Spaces

"New Yorkers and tourists alike will savor this one-of-a-kind volume that uniquely celebrates the energy and spirit of the city that never sleeps." ~Designers & Books

"A charmingly illustrated journey through New York City, neighborhood by neighborhood. All the Buildings in New York is a love letter to New York City, told through James Gulliver Hancock’s unique and charming drawings of the city’s diverse architectural styles and cityscape. His buildings are colorful and chock full of fun and offbeat details, and this book is full of new discoveries as well as old chestnuts for anyone who loves the Big Apple." ~Grainedit.com

"A Magnificent Obsession: New York" ~Againstthegrain.com

"...illustrator James Gulliver Hancock’s love letter to New York City." ~Archdaily.com

”...with each new building, he immerses himself deeper into a city that he once saw through a tourist’s eyes as a film set of pop-cultural references." ~fastcodesign.com

"In his new book All The Buildings In New York, Hancock assembles his charming and extensive drawings of some of the Big Apple’s most iconic buildings, as well as some more unfamiliar ones, into 64 pages of colorful illustrations. Described as a “love letter” to NYC, Hancock’s drawings capture its diverse architectural styles, from the brownstones of Brooklyn to the Art Deco Chrysler building." ~Architizer.com

"...takes you through New York's famed neighborhood with facts about the iconic buildings, and also shows the beauty of some of NYC's nameless, everyday structures." ~Business Insider

“Pledging to draw every building there was, he says it was his way of “remapping” the city into a more personal cartography. The result is a colorful, charming collection of what Hancock has seen and captured…Hancock’s illustrations aren’t labored with detail, but do offer fine points that bring out what is special in each building he chooses to render…this book is a lovely way to embrace the tangible..” ~North Adams Transcript

James Gulliver Hancock is an Australian who likes to travel. During his travels he would sketch obsessively the places he visits.

All the Buildings in New York is an ongoing project and this book can be said to be born out of that. On his blog, he posts regularly of the buildings he drew. He hasn't reach all yet, hence the asterisk in the title, but he has managed to capture many of the iconic and also unknown ones. The book has only 64 pages.

His style is simple and beautiful. There's a sort of cartoon vibe about the line work and colours. Even the non-eye catching ones have their own charm when presented as sketches. It's a pretty fun book to check out the diverse architectural styles.

Of course there are the iconic buildings like Woolworth Building, New York Times Building, Hook and Ladder 8 where Ghostbusters was filmed, , Time Square, St Patrick's Cathedral, Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and more.

There are also the residential buildings that line the busy streets of Manhattan.

Nice book to collect if you're into sketchbooks.

I've met Mr. Hancock a few times at art events in LA and was very excited to hear he had finally published a book. Just got it from Amazon, and am very impressed with this young man's grasp of the mood of New York. I think this would be a great book for some of the building owners to give as gifts to tenants, and in my case I'm giving it as gifts this year to several people that I know who are hardcore New Yorkers. I know they will be thrilled.

But I *am* waiting for the finishing version. So in other words this is "All the Buildings in New York: That I've Drawn So Far" not "All the Buildings in New York, period." The drawings have a lot of detail and are nicely done. You will definitely get a good idea of the variety of buildings in New York. It may even encourage you to visit some time.

Margaret Thatcher once said “Europe was built on history, but the USA was built on philosophy.” I agree, but our country was built on utility and urgency as much as philosophy. This is evident in the author’s preface of his book, where he compares the buildings of New York with those of Britain and Japan. He recognizes the Harlem stoops from Sesame Street, the fire houses from Ghostbusters, the Brooklyn row houses from Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, and too bad the city looks nothing today like it did in Kojak, Death Wish, or The taking of the Pelham 1,2,3.

James Gulliver Hancock captures exactly what NYC buildings came from, and that is utility. The tenements of the Lower East Side, with their fire escapes, were meant to be built quickly (and escaped from quickly if there was a fire.) His style of drawing is perfect for the project, and he captures all of the tiny details that make our city’s architecture so unique. He makes 235 Bowery look exactly like it is-a big glass box, or as Prince Charles would say, “a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a dear old friend.” Before that entire block was torn down in 2008 it would’ve have been quite a place to draw. But fortunately, now all of the Bowery is gone. It still has just the right touch of seediness.

But old 42nd Street from the movie Taxi Driver is gone. No more “25 cent peep show” signs. The artist would’ve had a field day with that one.

Beautiful! I sent this as a gift but had the opportunity to see it and was very pleased, although I had hoped there would be more info about each building (who, what when, where, and why) ,

The drawing are really well done...but rather random. There is no text and barely the name of each building...I love the drawing style, but would love just alittle more background of the buildings...i.e. location, why he selected to draw, what makes it noteworthy...etc.
The author has a right to publish the book as he pleases...just my opinion.
