Series: Road Trip USA
Paperback: 160 pages
Publisher: Avalon Travel Publishing; Second Edition edition (May 22, 2012)
Jamie Jensen grew up in Southern California, back when freeways were new, cheeseburgers cost a quarter, and every beach had a beachfront amusement park. After wasting his early 20s bumming around the country, making hay in Kansas and ghost-writing a book for the Grateful Dead, in 1990 Jamie set to work researching and writing Road Trip USA. Since then he's traveled more than 400,000 miles in search of the perfect stretch of two-lane blacktop, but when not criss-crossing the country by car he rides his bike whenever possible. Jamie lives with his wife Catherine and twin boys Tom and Alex in Davis, California, near the west end of US-50.
This book does not include everything that you need to know about the PCH, but makes a pretty good attempt. It's the most up to date book on places to stay, eat, and attractions to visit along the highway including necessary phone numbers and websites. (very handy!) It has pictures of the major attractions, small but effective maps in each of the major cities and in each state, and local event information for certain towns and cities. The author also tells when the best times to visit for things such as:whale watching in Oregon or Monarch butterfly gatherings in California. Another nice feature is that it tells the reader of local legends, past-times, festivals, and customs that shows what makes each little (and big) town distinctive from one another. What's more is that it is just small enough to fit inside a purse or back pocket for when you are ready to make that awesome roadtrip. The only thing I can really say that is disappointing about it, is that it just doesn't seem long enough. I wish he would've added another 50-100 pages of stories and attractions. Do not use this book as your only reference.

We had two guides for our vacation trip from Washington to San Francisco. This book was a great help and after a while our main source of information. With a GPS and internet information, this guide was just the right extra "kick" we needed to make it easy. Compact and only the info we were looking for. Thank you Jamie Jensen. The trip on 101 was about the most interesting vacation my wife and I had.

This book was very helpful for me. I read about several little local places that I had never heard of in all of my internet searches of the area. It's not the only travel book I will be purchasing but definetely a great addition!

As someone from the midwest attempting to plan a two week raod trip down the Pacific Coast Highway, I found this book to be immensely helpful. I carried it with me and consulted every day to help plan each leg of our journey. While not necessarily a must for the vacation, it's definitely helpful, especially if you want a mix of both touristy and off-the-beaten path destinations.

A nice little pocket guide that was handy to refer to during our drive on the pacific coast highway from 200 miles north of San Francisco to Morro Bay. It is not a guidebook with detailed information, but a summary reference for the main towns and sights you will pass. The book was very useful to alert us of what was coming up ahead and to help us plan our stops at towns, beaches or other attractions. It is a nice thin size to take along with you, but make sure you also bring a detailed map. If you drive the PCH, make sure you have plenty of gas because most of our drive was remote and gas station free.

We used this book to travel from San Diego to Bandon, Oregon. It was absolutely invaluable. We had a wonderful family vacation. All of the recommended restaurants were good. You have to keep in mind that in some remote areas, "good" is relative, but that is true of every travel guide! We were very happy with every recommendation in the book that we took. I highly recommend this book for anyone planning a road trip on any portion of the PCH!
