This is a great book and fantastic read, it's also small enough to make it easy to carry around with you when you're walking the streets of NY. I have never sat down and read a guide from cover to cover before but I couldn't put this one down. A must have for any New Yorker or those who are just visiting. It's also been a great way to teach my kids about some of the city's rich history and learn map reading at the same time so they'll know where they're going too. The maps are easy to commit to memory, and the info is easy to read but extremely in-depth. I highly recommend it, it's quicker to use and better than any app you can find.

As someone who loves NYC but hates figuring how to get around, I couldn't wait to get this book! It is the perfect guidebook for exploring the city! The book is broken down by area and highlights different points of interest, museums, neighborhood events, parks and public spaces, dining, shopping, nightlife and transportation information. The maps are extremely easy to read (I can get lost anywhere) and uses colors and outlines to show streets/areas that are worth exploring. Maps also show you places where you can park and the location of subways! The amount of detail in the maps is incredible! The time and dedication that James Schmitt has put into this book is clear! New York City, here I come!!

If you want to know where you are going in New York City - or places you might want to go to - this handy and attractive guide considers itself a "treasure map" of sorts. It outlines in black the streets which are worth exploring and breaks up the city into small neighborhoods highlighting where the action is. Shopping, dining and nightlife are color coded. The author notes that although individual restaurants may come and go, locations where restaurants are centered usually stay the same. Therefore, if you're looking for somewhere to eat, say, in Tribeca, it will show you which streets to visit.

There are different text symbols for museums, parks and points of interest among other destinations. There are little nuggets of history on important locales - you will learn that George Washington was inaugurated on the steps of Federal Hall in 1789 and Tribeca stands for Triangle Below Canal Street. The guide begins with Lower Manhattan on Map 1 and travels north through neighborhood maps culminating in Map 45 detailing Inwood. There are small colorful photos in each section.

I have been to New York City hundreds of times - taking classes at NYU - but learned so much perusing this map. There are many hidden treasures in New York City I had never heard of and would like to visit. You can choose several maps a day of areas to explore, and visit their destinations of interest. This is like having a native New Yorker as your personal guide in a very accessible format. There's a helpful subway overview and an index of sites at the end of this guide. The author clearly is passionate about New York where he lives and works, and is donating some of the proceeds of sales of this Ultimate NYC/Manhattan Guide to aid the homeless in New York. The graphics and color are great in this guide, making it a pleasure to view. Tourists and native New Yorkers, who want to explore other parts of their city, will find this guide useful.

The book is awesome! I just got it in the mail last week, and I love it! Even though I know NYC very well, as I used to live and work there for many years, it was interesting to see how some of the neighborhoods I knew 15-20 years ago have changed so much, and also interesting to see how some neighborhoods haven't changed a bit! Very user-friendly and comprehensive. Really guides the tourist in a simple way to all the best things to see/do in the city. Very impressive!

“Knowing Where You’re Going: New York City” is one of the easiest, most informative, guides to Manhattan (New York, NY) I have seen. Those unfamiliar with New York City will greatly appreciate the extensive maps, including those of major subway stations, Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station, allowing users to navigate easily to the many winding, often long, platforms, tunnels and stairs (or escalators and elevators) associated with major subway transportation hubs like the Union Square Station that has the “L”, “N”, “Q” and “R” trains on different platforms, with the “L” platform running east –west directly underneath the platforms for the “N”, “Q” and “R” trains – often dubbed the “Alphabet” trains – and the platforms for the “4”, “5” and “6” trains (“Number” trains). The author, James C. Schmitt, has divided the guide neighborhood by neighborhood, listing some of the most unique points of interest (museums, historic houses and parks) as well as some of the shops and restaurants, often depicting them in color photographs. A guide of this breadth and depth is unfortunately, not error proof, but the errors are virtually nonexistent, with the most egregious one being the misspelling of Bleecker Street as Bleeker Street [sic]. Portions of the proceeds from sales of this guide will benefit local charities aiding New York City’s homeless population, giving potential purchasers yet another compelling reason to purchase this guide.

This map and guide book to Manhattan is the most useful and accurate that I've seen, both for tourists and for New Yorkers.

It does an excellent job of breaking down Manhattan into functional neighborhoods and giving a good feel for each of them, from downtown to Inwood. The photographs in each chapter economically convey the feel for that particular area at a glance. The information is accurate and was obviously carefully selected for helpfulness.

The color coding on the maps for concentrated commercial, shopping, and dining & nightlife areas, as well as for public spaces, is an excellent feature. Points of interest, notable buildings, views, and gardens are thoughtfully chosen. There are also indicators at the edges of the maps pointing out the numbers of the adjacent maps.

Even long-time residents will find the marked locations for public restrooms and parking useful. It even includes a few museums that I didn't know about.

The subway information is exactly what is needed in navigating the system. The maps of the more complex stations that are a legacy of the merging of independent subway companies are extremely useful when planning a trip that involves changing lines in an unfamiliar station or for choosing the best exit.

There is even a short chapter with accurate advice about transportation. Each map has a scale with increments of minutes of walking time. Including the pathways in the various parks and the inter-block public passages also reflects the reality of getting around in Manhattan efficiently.
