"Don't leave home without STREETWISE" -- New York Times

"STREETWISE is an absolute travel essential" -- Travel & Leisure

"In a strange city, your sense of direction is only as good as the map in your hands. The best maps to carry are published by STREETWISE." --Chicago Daily Herald

About the Author

STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn’t match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we’ve done the work, now you have the adventure.

In the end, it’s not about the map, it’s about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It’s about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

My son will be going to Berlin this summer to study.

If you expect to be primarily in the city center, a Streetwise map is perfect, and it's so easy to tuck into a pocket or bag.

I use streetwise all over the world if they make one for the city I want.

The Streetwise Berlin map was convenient even though it does not cover the outer limits of Friedrichstein and basically does not cover outside of the S/U Bahn A/B zone. However, the area it covers is what a tourist generally needs. The best part of the map, in addition to it's size, was the S/U Bahn map which made it convenient and quick to figure out which train to take and the proper direction. It doesn't cover the street trams, but we could figure this out easily and did not find a map that covered that anyhow. We used this Streetwise map constantly. And, like I said, the Berliners I met, all said that the map was fantastisch. Small sized, it fits right into your bag or pocket and notes museums and other great sight in pink.

I got this map last year as a gift before I moved to Berlin for a short time. It was nice to have when we were in the Center of Berlin, but there are large parts of Berlin that are not on the map, so we also had another more extensive map of Berlin. Keep in mind that they also changed the subway system a bit in December 2004, so the map I have has the old map on it. There are subway maps on all the trains, so you can find your way around very easily.

Its a useful and durable tourist map, but any good guidebook will have the same included.

I just received my Streetwise Berlin map. I'm sorry I bothered. It is a real disappointment. For one thing, it is very small - the map area when fully opened is only about 25" x 8" which means that for one thing, detail is lacking, for another only the central slice of the city is covered, and everything is so small as to make the map difficult to use.
I would strongly suggest avoiding this map. Instead, seriously consider the city maps by Berndtson. I have used their maps in several European cities, they are a lot larger though still, when folded, as compact as the Streetwise one, they are easy to use, well-marked and detailed, and also laminated (the Streetwise map is laminated too, but that does not make up for its other probelms.)
I have also used Hammond city maps in Europe and found them quite good too. At least their Prague map is excellent.
Don't waste the momey on the cruddy Streetwise map when far superior products are out there for the same price.

Those who complain about the area covered are missing the point of Streetwise maps. They don't require the constant folding and unfolding of a more comprehensive map. If you expect to be primarily in the city center, a Streetwise map is perfect, and it's so easy to tuck into a pocket or bag. Any Berlin map does run the risk of becoming outdated, since the city has changed regularly since reunification, but the 2008 revised edition now being sold is reliable and seems up to date.

It did not cover everywhere in Berlin I needed to be, both north and south. But its small size was convenient to fold and unfold without too much bother, and the lamination made that easy to do, as well as waterproof. The u-bahn/s-bahn system map was, likewise, not perfect but adequate: I had to squint to read it, but it was convenient to picture the whole system in one place, and to have the transport map in the same easy-fold easy-go map as Berlin itself.

I've bought a number of these maps over the years to use for navigating European cities. They are the best available. Very clear and consise, small and durable; great for carrying in your pocket. They are very well designed, laying out the center city and the tourist spots in a very clear grid. However, the small print does require reading glasses, a small price to pay for such a great map.

This Streetwise map, which was delivered later than promised from Amazon and too late for my trip to Germany, turned out to be less than hoped for in that its area was too confined to the center area of the city and insufficient for use beyond the center. I have used Streetwise maps for other cities in Europe, but this was more limited for general use than the others. They are convenient, but a larger city paper map was more useful in this case anyway.

There is a surprising lack of coverage of the southern part of the city. Kurfurstendamm -- Viktoria-Louise Platz is as far as it goes. Leaving out Bayerischer Platz for example. You know, where Einstein used to live.

Schonhauser Allee and other northern city points are on the back of the map as is the entire rail-system in very small print.

Fine for most inner city uses, but the map is very dense with inconsistent graphics/icons and coverage needs to be increased somewhat.

The lamination and material are durable.
