It helped to make my trip to Austria more meaningful.
Millie Parker
What I love about this book is that it has a great amount of information, and that information is provided in short segments.

As someone who packs light, I found this book to be too heavy.

I thought my itinerary was finished. I looked through this book to see if I had missed anything that I had not discovered in other books. What caught my attention were the color photos. I am planning to do day trips from Linz. What a surprise to see the Wilhering baroque church just 10 minutes away. I was considering going to Salzburg when I saw a photo of the Traunsee from Ebensee. Sure enough, I could ride a scenic railway through the Saltzkammergut region to Salzburg. Then I was looking for a half day to combine with my final day exploring Vienna. The photo of Laxenburg made me investigate and now I want to experience that.

I found some other interesting sights but they will have to wait as I am out of vacation days. Kudos to DK for knowing how to put a real travel guide together.

These Eyewitness travel guides are the best. Lots of information and photos crammed into a relatively small book which can be carried in a coat pocket. We are especially interested in the Austrian Christmas markets. One little paragraph in this book put us on to three markets in three towns we otherwise wouldn't have found.

As always the Eyewitness Travel Guide is AWESOME. The one for Austria is no different. I love all of the pictures and maps. This is all I will need to take with me on my vacation!

I purchased both this and a Lonely Planet brand guide book for my Austria trip, and of course, they are two very different guides. This was my first Eyewitness guide and I find that it is almost entirely focused on sightseeing. Which admittedly, it a large part of travel. When you get this book, you are getting a sort of mini-guide book for every palace and museum that you could possibly go to while you're there.
It has tons of wonderful color photos so that you can get an idea of what you would see at these places which certainly helps when deciding what is important for you to go see and what you can miss.

What I found this guide to be majorly lacking in is practical travel information. There is barely any information on places to stay. Hotels are listed in an entirely separate section from the city guides, and the hotels that they do list are primarily for people who are traveling with a rather significant budget. Same story with places to eat.

There is some practical travel information in the very back of the book, but it was very broad. My Lonely Planet guidebook doesn't have all the detail on museums and palaces that this book has, but it does have plenty of good travel tips and suggestions for each city and town that this Eyewitness guide is lacking
Are you interested in taking a day hike and seeing some of the countryside? You won't find any suggestions here. Are there deals to be had on tickets or passes in a city? They aren't listed in this book

I'm older now and no longer staying in group dorms at a hostel, so I don't begrudge this book for not catering to cheap travelers, but I do want more from a travel guide than "here's a picture and a history lesson"

These books really aid in getting all you can out of your travels. Highly recommend them. Used these books every day of our trip.

Like every DK book, it's easy to navigate. It breaks the country into regions which and then allows you to drill down into more detail. It helps your brain organize the information. The pictures and short descriptions make it easy to decide what you want to see and what you want to research further. Many sites list web addresses making it easy to get updated times and prices. DK is always the book of choice when planning a trip.

This is a beautiful and informative travel guide, but it's not easy to travel with. As someone who packs light, I found this book to be too heavy. This heft is probably due to the excellent paper quality, though, so there's a trade off. The book is full of great information and lovely pictures, but I think it will better serve me simply as a reference book that I'd keep on the book shelf rather than a guide book that I'd throw in my rucksack. My only complaint about the content itself was the limited restaurant and hotel listings. I would have liked to have seen more, especially hostels, and I would like it to be more intuitively organized. The hotel and restaurant listings all came at the back of the book instead of in individually city sections.
