If you're planning to rent a car in France, you need one of these. I like the fact that some of the more interesting towns have a rectangle around it.

If you like to visit out of the way places, you need this map. I've actually held maps in my hand where the village or the road to the village were not shown on other maps. Or, the road was on one map and the village was on the 2nd map.I have also experienced following a GPS and ending up in a driveway, rather than the small town I wanted. Granted, I was in the winding roads of the Dordone and in a small region with steep hills, still the GPS was "over it's head" and truly was lost. So, if you are driving through Germany, you can skip the map purchase and do well with a GPS. In France, however, backup your adventure on small roads with one of these oversized maps or, at least, use the Michelin App.

This map was sufficient for navigating the major freeways and highways. It was not detailed enough for some of the smaller roads. There were no inset close-ups of the major cities.

Good, detailed, spill-proof map of all roads leading in and out of most towns. Some smaller towns in Provence not listed here, but I just purchased one of Michelin's more detailed maps for that region. The size of this map could cover a table, so not too easy to deal with in a small, European car, but definitely detailed.
