If you are planning a trip to Myanmar, you are probably wondering which travel guide to use. This review is a comparison of the Insight Guides Myanmar (Burma), IGMB, April 2013, to Lonely Planet Myanmar (Burma), LPMB, Dec 2011. Each has its strengths and weaknesses; they are designed for different purposes, and that needs to be taken into account when you choose. For more information on Lonely Planet Myanmar (Burma) 2011, see my review for that book.
OVERALL COMPARISON
Overall, LPMB has more text details, and IGMB has lots of color pictures. If and when LP publishes a Discover Myanmar (Burma) guide, it will be more comparable to IGMB. For my purposes, both guides are useful and somewhat complementary in purpose.
IGMB has between 25% to 100% of most pages dedicated to mostly pictures and some maps. This has two obvious implications:
1. IGMB has less text than LPMB. LPMB does have a few pictures and more maps, but most of the pages are filled with paragraph text, text boxes, and tables.
2. IGMB has a lot more pictures, in color on glossy paper, compared to LPMB. It has maps of the larger regions, which means fewer details for use in town.
Arguably, LPMB, with its greater quantity of text, and listings, would seem to be the better choice for a book to bring with you, especially if your trip is longer, or if you are going to make your plans as you go along. IGMB has more descriptive information on the sights and history than LPMB.
But all those pictures in IGMB may be very useful for travelers planning a trip, especially in deciding which country to visit, or which areas within the country to visit.Read more ›

At least this seems to be a thorough exploration of a little-known (to most Westerners, anyway) country. Accessing the information in it, however (at least on the Kindle edition) is maddening with no index, a reasonably useless table of contents, and no way to return easily to where you left off after linking to a more detailed explanation or map. Maybe it'll just take some time for me to figure out how it works...

I love these books because of the great photos and concise description of what to see. A great way to plan and review what you want to do each day. This is the one guide book I take with me. You probably want to use something else for places to stay and where to eat--

I have never used an Insight Guidebook before, but because it was the most recent book published on Myanmar purchased it. A nice surprise. Good photos and had quite a lot of interesting decent information. I think this could be used by both independent travelers and those on organized tours.

This is a fantastic guide book as it has amazing photos and excellent background information about Myanmar and the major sights to see along with great information about those sites. My reaction at first to this book was that it did not have enough detailed information on transportation, accommodations or places to eat. But once I read more of this book I've realised the other positive aspects of this book more then makes up for what maybe a little lacking in those areas. As this is a very high quality guide book, the type of book that would look fine on someones "coffee table" unlike let say a lonely planet guide book. And as far as lonely planet guide books, I was considering getting the one for Myanmar but the reviews on amazon were were not very good at all. Also I have noticed lately the more recent releases of the lonely planet guide books in general have gone down both in quality as they have less photos and are being printed on much cheaper quality paper and I would say even in substance of the books to. This is not the case at all with this guide book, it is printed on very high quality glossy paper along with lots of fantastic photos and the text has lots of substance that is very up to date. While reading the book and looking at the amazing photos I already feel like I have taken a journey to Myanmar. Also I noticed one other review here on amazon giving a low rating because the downloaded/Kindle version of this book does not have an index. Well that does not really matter because this is one book for sure you want to get a hard copy of and not a down loaded version because of the quality of the hard copy of the book itself and the photos. I even had to pay extra to have it shipped to Asia where I am now living and it was well worth paying the extra shipping fee for this top quality guide book, get it you will not regret it.

These are essential for navigating a travel guide and their absence is amazing and very disappointing. The publisher must fix this and I strongly advise not to buy it until then.

I have just read this book in preparation for our holiday in Myanmar starting later this week. It is an extremely readable book. It is ordered in a really intuitive way - in the order of information that I was keen to know (starting at a high-level and going to detail). It is so intuitive and well-written that it was very easy to read and take the information I think we most need. Highly recommended.
