Editorial Reviews

From the Author

"It was the adventure of a lifetime" says Gerret Kalkoffen, author of the new book Plan & Go: The John Muir Trail. After 15 days, Gerret and his good friend Josh had hiked over 222 miles. Their adventure began in Yosemite Valley and ended at the top of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the continental US. By then they had ascended and descended over 90,000 ft. "I love to go hiking, but had never gone backpacking for more than three days in a row. Preparing for the John Muir Trail took a lot of research and effort. I wanted to make my findings and experiences available to anyone who is toying with the idea of hiking the JMT and tell them, they should go for it!", says Gerret.

About the Author

Gerret was born 1981 in Hamburg, Germany. Since before he can remember, his father took him along on hikes and sparked his love of the outdoors. Gerret has since enjoyed hiking trips in various parts of the Alps, the Philippines, China, New Zealand, Canada, and the US. With his background in business and engineering, Gerret is always interested in improved gear and technical solutions. Besides the peace he feels when in nature, he enjoys the physical challenge the mountains pose. Currently, Gerret is an overjoyed expectant first-time father and so very proud of his wife Nadja. The soon-to-be three live in San Diego, California.

This book may also become handy for other trips, the advice is not limited to the JMT - its like a short one on one for planning your hiking trips.

Reading the second part, I had the feeling of walking along with the author along the trail - his descriptions are that clear and vivid.

Hiking the John Muir Trail is not an easy feat - it typically takes around 15 days of hiking and often for numerous days without being able to resupply food or water. Temperatures vary from close to freezing at night to hot and dusty during the day. But rewards are plentiful: among the highlights is climbing to the top of 14,505 ft high Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the continental US. Planning this trip in detail is key to a successful and enjoyable hike.

Like the title suggests, the book is split into two major parts: planning the trip and a detailed account of the journey. This first part goes into great detail to explain what equipment options are available and what the pros/cons of a particular option might be (e.g. water disinfection, fuel, tents, shoes, meals). In addition, food/meals are covered in detail, going so far as providing meal plans for balanced and varied eating during the trip. The second part of the book takes you along the journey of hiking the John Muir Trail with detailed and colorful descriptions of the marvel you will witness when you hike the trail. This part really makes you want to start planning the hike immediately.

Plan & Go: The John Muir Trail: is a great and very helpful book. Even though it goes through planning and preparation in great detail (the author is a German engineer!) it is never difficult or tedious to read. Quite the contrary: there are so many insights (often mistakes the author has made and now honestly shares) - that I looked forward to continue reading. It really is like a cookbook, following the easy instructions will make this trip a success. Reading the second part, I had the feeling of walking along with the author along the trail - his descriptions are that clear and vivid. Overall a fantastic book: both for those who plan to hike the John Muir Trail and are looking for a guide to help make the trip a success and for those who want to find out what marvel lies in hiking the John Muir Trail.

Probably the most practical and straight-forward guide on preping and hiking the JMT out there. Contains a wealth of useful information and offers great advice. The loads of information and content are structured well, with tables, charts, maps and illustrations. That makes it really easy to look up specific details without having to read through pages of text first.

If you ever want to convince someone to hike the Jmt with you, get them this book and tell them to read the personal experience chapter first. A friend did that with me and it worked! Apart from the inspirational aspect, the book also contains lots of useful information and additional resources necessary to adequately prepare for the trip. Definitely recommend it.

While very technical at first, the author has found a good way to mix personal experiences from his JMT adventure with well researched technical details that help you chose the right equipment and plan your trip.

When preparing for the JMT I was browsing through the Internet looking for advice and some more information about what kind of adventure I signed up for. Plenty of blogs and web pages provide you with lots of information, but mostly the obvious details like a timely registration for hiking permit, resupply options, or pictures are being discussed and shared. Since I don’t have the time to read through hundreds of pages, nor do I seek personal pleasure from months of planning, I was looking for a comprehensive collection of information that does this job for me, and that would give me honest feedback of what worked well and what could be improved. "Plan & Go" does exactly that. This book educates hiking rookies about the different options for equipment, how they plan their meals or even calculate how much fuel they need to carry along - even hiking veterans may pick up the one or the other tip. This book may also become handy for other trips, the advice is not limited to the JMT - its like a short one on one for planning your hiking trips.

I very much like the personal note that the author has given in this book. Those people who are still struggling whether they should sign up for the JMT adventure will be convinced by the author's graphical descriptions of his sections each day.

Detailed information about choosing everything from gear to food to hiking buddies. And the author covers the details of his own trek (packing list, troubles, campsites, etc.), so you know that his recommendations are backed up by practical experience. While it was written with the John Muir Trail in mind, most of the first 6 chapters apply to Sierra Nevada backpacking in general. Makes me fidgety for the trailhead.
