I've lived in NYC (one year) and visited many times, but usually find myself flummoxed when it comes to seeing the city. More often than not, I walk through the Village, Chinatown and/or Little Italy, stopping in a bar or two along the way, and then I go home. Perhaps because the city is so overwhelming I end up doing something completely underwhelming. This books reminds me of all the gems I'm missing out on -- a drink at the Rainbow Room, cocktails at Dorothy Parker's Algonquin and a tour of the United Nations. Last time I went to NYC, I brought this book and had a fabulous time!

I have looked at a lot of New York guide books. I've bought some of them. This is by far the best. I absolutely love it.

It covers everything, from the more obvious New York attractions, such as the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty etc. It also covers food, shopping, arts, the streets and hidden gems. You can visit part of the Berlin wall in midtown, or the old City Hall station on the 6 train.

I've lived here for 2 years and this book consistently informs me of things lots of New Yorkers don't know about. It really is quality and quantity and I cannot recommend it more.

I was looking for a book that helps me to discover NYC in a different way and this book was the best! You have every corner of the city with all the information to organize you trip. It is very well organized and every type of places. I highly recommend for people who likes to discover cities in a non-traditional way.

It was a great book until we actually got to NYC and found out that everywhere we wanted to go from the book had closed. Seriously, everything. I know it can't be updated by the minute but it was a slightly frustrating. So much so that I left it in the garbage in the hotel because it wasn't worth bring home which is very out of character for me.

I usually don't review books but I am going to make an exception for this one just to prevent what happened to me from happening to someone else.

With that said, I think this is a great book with a lot of brilliant ideas. I bought it before my first trip to NYC and tabbed half the pages as things I wanted to see/do so I'm sad to give it only 3 stars. However, it must be said that you should take some of the advice with caution if you are not from NYC or a frequent visitor. Some of the information is outdated (which is understandable). For instance the suggestions of where to eat and how to get there. Per the suggestion of this book we went to a waterfront restaurant in Queens that was supposed to have a spectacular view of the city (it did). The book advised that you take a ferry across the water and the restaurant was walking distance from the ferry stop. Well, we got on the ferry and went across the water, which was a marvelous experience in and of itself, but low and behold when it was our stop there was nothing there! The whole ferry station had been torn down (loss of first star). The ferry driver was hesitant to let us off the boat but I was determined to get to the restaurant! We had to walk through the labyrinth of a demolition site (in a pretty sketchy area I must say) only to find that the restaurant was nowhere in sight! It happened to be about 4 or 5 miles down the road (we ended up hailing the first cab we saw) and in a very remote location.

Recently moved to the city, so I bought this book with hopes of learning a lot very quickly. It's been so valuable thus far, and includes lots of things I never would have thought of or discovered on my own. Worth the money.

Bought this book as a gift. The recipients love it, because it is informative on the locations that guides to visit and pretty much has all Best Things to Do in NY.
