Editorial Reviews

Review

"Yellowstone Treasures is not merely the most thorough, well researched, and comprehensive guide book available about the Park today. It is the most comprehensive guide book to Yellowstone National Park ever written. Whether you’re planning a visit of a few hours or a few weeks, the single best printed companion you can bring along is Janet Chapple’s Yellowstone Treasures."  —Leslie J. Quinn, interpretive specialist, Xanterra Parks & Resorts, Inc.

About the Author

Janet Chapple is a Montana native whose parents once worked at Old Faithful Inn, the historic lodge in Yellowstone Park. She is the author of three previous editions of Yellowstone Treasures and the cotranslator of the English edition of Yellowstone, Land of Wonders, an 1883 travelog to and through Yellowstone by Belgian travel writer Jules Leclercq. She lives in Oakland, California.

More About the Author

Please visit: http://www.yellowstonetreasures.com for lots of information about Yellowstone, including over thirty nuggets with pictures. You will also find a link to my blog on that home page.

My association with Yellowstone goes back to early childhood days when my parents worked in Old Faithful Inn. My love of Yellowstone Park can be traced to memories of waiting for geysers to erupt, visiting with rangers, attending slide shows and sing-alongs in the amphitheater, playing hide-and-seek in the inn, and watching as my father assigned passengers to the big yellow tour buses.

Knowing about my connection to and love of the park is what led a friend to ask if I wanted to collaborate to update the long-popular Haynes Guides to Yellowstone (which went out of print in the 1960s). Although the friend soon dropped out of the project, the momentum took hold, and I was hooked!

Taking extended field trips once or twice a summer, reading, researching, and writing throughout the other seasons, I took five years to create Yellowstone Treasures, which was released in January 2002. A second, fully updated, edition of Yellowstone Treasures was published in 2005, and the new updated third edition in April 2009. "I plan to keep updating and marketing it as long as I can or until I am 80 years old--whichever comes first!" is my promise to myself and my readers.

When asked whether I really walked all the geyser routes and hiking trails described in the book, my answer is that I hiked on all the trails I recommend, some of them several times. I could never be in the park without walking around all of Upper Geyser Basin. Once I started out alone in an October snowstorm, but was soon joined by a bison. In summers, together with many friends and family members, I explored trails that I now recommend and a few others I don't. I recommend those that are not too strenuous--they are ways to get away from crowds and enjoy the Yellowstone that not everyone sees.

My husband, Bruno Giletti, Professor Emeritus of Geological Sciences at Brown University, contributed the geological history chapter to Yellowstone Treasures and wrote many of the geological sidebars that appear throughout the book, as well as taking the majority of the colored pictures.

Along with constantly updating and promoting Yellowstone Treasures, I continue researching and sharing my knowledge and love for the park by writing articles for the book's companion Web site, www.yellowstonetreasures.com. I have also completed two other books about Yellowstone; one, called Yellowstone, Land of Wonders, is a translation (done with colleague Suzanne Cane) of a Belgian visitor's account from his 1883 trip and will be published in the spring of 2013 by the University of Nebraska Press. The other is an anthology of early Yellowstone writings. My husband and I live near San Francisco but make frequent trips to Yellowstone.

This was a wonderful addition to our trip. As we would head to a new vista to see, a geyser to explore, or animals to marvel at - I would read excerpts of this book to the family. They loved it!!! It is like having a park guide with you sharing bits of information that add so much to the experience. Now that we are back home, I continue to hear the children and my husband talk about the book Mom had and how great it was to hear the extra information. A real plus to our trip and a must for yours. I did pass the book around before the trip and encouraged each person to look through it and flag anything they wanted to be sure to see. Buy it! And be sure and visit this treasure of a place.

We plan on visiting Yellowstone later this year. I bought this book to refresh my memory about the park and surrounding area. This book does all of that and more! It gives detailed information about all five regions of the park, and about the surrounding area. It has beautiful pictures of some of the main natural attractions in the park. It gives suggestion for hiking, lodging, and many other resources. It is like having your own personal Tour Guide. I will definitely be using this book on my trip later this summer!

Have looked at dozens of books on Yellowstone in preparation for our visit to the park. This one, by far, contains the most detailed information. Not just a travel guide, it also covers the history and complex geology of the area. If you want to purchase just one book on Yellowstone, this is the one.

We just returned from a Winter in Yellowstone trip and this was a great resource to keep handy as we traveled around the park. It would be even more invaluable during the spring to fall seasons when all the trails are open. Gives interesting and fun historical and anecdotal tidbits as well as kilometer by kilometer info on what you will see on each trail or road. Our tour guide even asked to borrow it at one point! You won't miss anything when you follow this guide.

Can't wait to use this on our trip this summer. Others said it was the one to get and I can see why. Takes you step by step along any route, pointing out the highlights along the way.

We took two books to Yellowstone-this was one and it was a gem(the other was A Ranger's Guide to Yellowstone Day Hikes-equally invaluable). The maps and descriptions were a tremendous help. We read through the book while planning our trip and weren't disappointed in anything that we did. We kept it close at hand in the park the whole week. There wasn't a day that we didn't consult it. Now that we're home, I look at the dog-eared little book and am so thankful for the reviews I read about this book and decided to order it to plan our trip.

Used this book before visiting Yellowstone for the first time and it help formulate a plan. We stayed in Gardiner and did Yellowstone for three days, then went through Yellowstone on the fourth day and through The Tetons, and on to Jackson. The book includes areas surrounding Yellowstone too.
