Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Aimed quite frankly at hipsters, this volume from the online travel magazine Off Track Planet offers sage advice for budget travelers who are looking for more than just a vacation. It's composed under a steadfast belief that "backpacking, with an open mind and empty bank account, is the best way to learn about the world." Brooklyn-based editors Pikovsky and Starostinetskaya divide their content into three sections: "Get Inspired," "Get Your Shit Together," and "Make Yourself Useful." They collect "oddities, traditions, fascinating events, and happenings in various destinations around the world" before providing information on practical logistics as well as "work, study and volunteer opportunities available abroad." Sections on extreme sports in foreign countries, including skydiving over the Great Barrier Reef, snowboarding in Whistler, B.C., and canyoneering in Interlaken, are geared toward those in search of boundless thrills. The sections on art and design provide terrific takes on background history, for example, on "Antoni Gaudí, Barcelona's deranged master of plaster drippy, twisted buildings the otherwise classic Spanish city blocks... into stare-worthy attractions." The food sections deal with cheap and traditional eats—often street food—to be had in places such as Argentina and Vietnam. Such chapters help to round out this trendy and visually appealing guidebook. (May)

"The guide draws you in with it’s beautiful photography, layout, and typography, and finishes you off with its concise, to-the-point must-knows on a variety of travel topics. All the while reading it, I was inspired and wanderlusting. Mission accomplished. ...Beautiful, easy to read, informative, and hip….This is a terrific guide for those interested in traveling but not really sure where to start. …you can’t help but be inspired to book a flight after paging through these beautiful pages. I’d highly recommend this to any 18-23 year old interested in vagabonding backpacking trip overseas but unsure where to start."

"a must-have guide for any young adult with an urge to see more of the world. Put another way, this is not your typical boring coffee-table guide."

In fact, I loved this book so much that I actually READ it- I didn't skim through it.

I suggest this book if you are looking to enjoy your time and figure out how to have fun all over the world as a broke and slightly delusional college grad!

A very well written, visually enticing, and extremely informative book with a fresh, hip take on travel!

I have skimmed (important word here) through a ton of travel guides, all of which essentially offer the same information which ultimately becomes very boring and provides little inspiration. The title of this book is what grabbed my attention- it's a pretty bold title for a travel guide. So, of course, I picked it up and then immediately formed an addiction. In fact, I loved this book so much that I actually READ it- I didn't skim through it. It's witty, creative, but most of all it's honest. They really want to provide you with realistic, budget-friendly ways of traveling while also showing you "hidden gems" and "off the beaten path" places. It's the type of book that gets you excited and inspires you to just drop what you're doing and go on an adventure. Best part is: they have a weekly magazine on their website which helps feed your addiction.

Many people think that if you are low on money you can't afford to go on an adventure. Off Track Planet straight up busts that theory.

A very well written, visually enticing, and extremely informative book with a fresh, hip take on travel! The ease with which they capture that inexplicable cool factor found in travel is intoxicating. This read leaves you inspired to see the world! I wholeheartedly recommend!

This book made me laugh on every page, it is witty, satirical, raunchy (it has almost a whole page dedicated to getting into the "Mile High Club"), intelligent, and most of all REALLY helpful. It has some real life advise, like "Your pack will be on your back like a nagging wife whom you can't divorce any time soon. Do not buy a pack online without first giving it an in-person test run" instead of the dry blah blah blah monotony of other travel guides that don't even give you the slightest indication that the museum of wingdoodles is a totally lame. I loved that the book gave me some apps to download to make everything from finding my plane ticket to uploading my travel itinerary (for worried, or interested parents). I immediately downloaded all of them and so far so good on hitting a home run with all of them. I have traveled alone quite a bit, and am always trying struggling to describe to people why it is an experience everyone should have, this book nails it. I am going to Thailand in a month and can't contain my excitement because this book got me so jazzed to get up and GO!
Buy it buy it buy it. You'll read every hilarious page, I promise.

I loooooooved this book. It made me want to go everywhere and anywhere. The organization is very cool too, because you can focus on what interests you most about traveling. If you are interested in art, they have compiled a list of the best places to see art. If you are interested in partying, they have a lot of that too. If you are young and want to take a different path for a couple years rather than a 9-5 job, this book is for you!

According to my daughter this is by far one of the best travel books she has ever read. It was user friendly, it is informative on not only sites, but how to travel on a budget. It also helps those wanting to backpack across in other countries by informing them on ways they can make money while traveling. Great book, a must buy!

Fun travel guide. Big fan of the website as well.
Certainty not a comprehensive guide for any specific place - but will give you singular fun ideas across the globe.

Instead of a High School Graduation card for my 2nd cousin Taylor, this book served as my card with my check inside. The book was passed around at the party. I think Taylor and his father are off to Thailand or other exotic parts, leaving Taylor's mom home in Michigan!
