Atlantic Canada doesn't get the attention it deserves from travelers. It takes a little extra effort to get there. One must drive past the lovely Maine coast or hop a flight or a ferry to reach the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland. However, it's worth the effort. Also worth the effort is planning ahead to time the seasons and the transportation links to take advantage of the scenery, the history, the recreational opportunities, and the Canadians themselves, who have always been good hosts to this reviewer.
"Fodor's Nova Scotia & Atlantic Canada" provides a concise planning resource and compact travel guide. There is a nice introduction to the region, followed by chapters on each of the individual provinces. The chapters hit the highlights in terms of things to see, where to stay and what to eat, including some sample itineraries. The narrative takes note of the distinctive ethnic treasures to be found, whether the Scottish traditions of Cape Breton, or the Acadian traditions of New Brunswick. And who could miss "Anne of Green Gables" land in PEI? The text includes some decent sketch maps and diagrams, and there are plenty of web addresses for further research. The concluding chapter has some travel practicalities. This reviewer wishes there were more photographs included. This guide is best recommended to first time visitors looking for the basics.
