Review

"If you're in the mood for a light-hearted, infographic-filled travel book for all destinations and destination types, then this is what you want to pick up." (Doobybrain 2013-02-17)

More About the Author

Nigel Holmes (me; born 1942) grew up in England, and moved to the US in 1978 to work at Time Magazine. When I left in 1994 I was the graphics director, and had written three books about graphic design. (They're out of print now, but Amazon usually has second-hand copies.) Newer books include Wordless Diagrams (2005) and Nigel Holmes on Information Design (2006), by Steven Heller.

My first children's book is Pinhole and the Expedition to the Jungle. It's for children aged somewhere around 11 or 12 (but people tell me it's not really a children's book at all!) You can also get a full-color version of it for the iPad, with jungle sounds.

NEW BOOK! The Book of Everything (Lonely Planet, December 2012). It's full of tips, friendly warnings, diagrams, maps, charts, lists and fun associated with travel (some only tangentially associated, I must say).

Please don't get me mixed up with another Englishman named Nigel Holmes. He has written lots of books about a particular aspect of photography.

This is a great coffee table book, or a bathroom reader lol, we keep it in the car for long car trips or just waiting in the car.

Strong informational design and graphics make this book not only fun to read and learn from, it's a joy just to look at.

Our entire family of 5, two adults and 3 teenagers, LOVES THIS BOOK. It has so many useful tidbits. From how to open a coconut to escaping from a sinking car. This is an excellent book to read just for fun and also learn a whole lot of really useful things. This book would be a great gift for anyone (Especially a teen that is hard to buy for!), an excellent coffee table book, or light reading for the 'necessary room'.

About 50% of this guide was very helpful, with instructions on keeping your room safe from burglars, avoiding a crocodile attack, carrying an injured friend to safety, and more. Some information was interesting but not necessary for a vacation (such as finding a good diamond, knowing what air-traffic control signals mean, etc), though it might be useful in other situations. Towards the end of the book especially, there is some cute but fairly useless information (I.e. what international flags would look like if the world were ruled by cats). Then there was some information which was questionable or, in one case, downright inaccurate. For example, there is a section on how to flirt (and ask for a one night stand) in multiple languages. I'm sure this is popular, but I think it should have been accompanied with a list of words for condom, the countries with the biggest AIDS epidemics, and the countries where premarital sex is illegal. The inaccurate section was the one on shark attacks. It lists bull sharks as being 7ft long, while in reality they are much bigger (and more dangerous than ANY other shark). This section was also poorly written. It says to attack a shark if it approaches you, but does not explain how to identify which sharks are, in fact, dangerous. It also advises bringing a spear gun on dives, and personally, I'd be more worried about getting shot in the leg by a first-time diver than being bitten by a shark. Finally, there were a few instructions in this book for things like CPR which should be learned IN PERSON. Overall, this is an okay book, a fun read, but I'd look elsewhere for a more detailed survival guide or a guide to a particular country.

Nigel Holmes is a supreme information graphics artist and his
work has influence many aspiring students throughout the world.

I recommend that students and fellow professionals would gain a great
deal of insight from his title.

This is a great, informative book that is presented in a fun visually pleasing manner. I loved the content, the way it was simply and creatively put together. It is fun to read and my oldest child (12) found it very amusing. Some things I was aware of, but I also learned a lot as well.

Very good book.

"The Lonely Planet Book of Everything: A Visual Guide to Travel and the World" by Nigel Holmes is a wonderful travel book. This British contribution to the travel scene is not only filled with fascinating things to read on the airplane, train, ship, bus... It's loaded with truly helpful travel information like how to count to ten in 25 different languages (although an accompanying pronunciation guide would be particularly helpful), what bugs are safe to eat in the jungle and how to deliver a baby or perform a tracheotomy (can't wait to use this new knowledge). It may also be helpful to know how to avoid and survive shark attacks and quicksand.

My only issue so far with the book is the tipping standard it presents. From the standpoint of a Las Vegas taxi cab driver, many of their fares are less than $10, and a $1.50 tip is sparse. When you consider that this person is wholly responsible for your physical safety, I think you should probably tip better than you would your waitress at Chili's. I do appreciate that the author states that the tipping standard is only a suggestion and you should check with locals for the correct percentage. Otherwise, this is a fun, informative guide that is both practical and entertaining with lots of colorful pictures.

Gave this book as a Christmas grab bag item since I thought it would appeal to all ages. It did! A 45 year old pulled it out of the bag and an 18 year-old was fighting with her over it. ;)

The word "Everything" in the title might be a bit of an overstatement, but there are quite a lot of interesting trivia and travel tips packed into this beautifully designed book. In fact, the graphics are the best part of the book: if there's a page that is not illustrated, I did not find it.

As a trivia lover, I enjoyed perusing the book, but I can't say that I see any real usefulness here. None of the topics is treated in much detail, and the travel and survival tips are disparate and somewhat random. A random sampling of the random samples includes:

-- two pages of animal tracks - one for Africa showing only five species, and one for the US showing ten;
-- instructions on how to do myriad things such as land a falling jet plane, play croquet, watch the Northern Lights and survive in quicksand;
-- two pages show how the Tube tunnels under the Thames were built;
-- a smattering of etiquette tips, which for England show how to curtsy for the Queen - should you be among the rare few that ever get the chance to do so;
-- a map of weirdly names places in the US with one from Scotland thrown in; and
-- an emergency joke kit.

This book is more entertainment than anything, and in that it succeeds fairly well. It's fun to read.

All in all, this book is for those who like travel trivia and those who like wall-to-wall info-style graphics.
