On a recent trip I took along a few guidebooks of the major cities of Germany, but this was the only one for the entire country. I found that Fodor's is so improved that it now includes some lesser known sites and more precise directions than the Fodor's I used to know. It was easy to tear out the chapters of a particular region and carry them with me for the week in a city. It provided very clear and concise background information and was truly essential for some of the out of the way places I took as day trips outside cities like Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, and Munich. I had been to Germany a number of times and this guidebook impressed me for its depth and accuracy as well as a source of some new things to do that I had not known about from previous trips. It may not be the only guide you'll want (some of Rick Steves' books are great too), but for a comprehensive guide to a country, this is the best.

Although Fodor's continues to "star" mainly the higher end hotels and restaurants, I feel it is a wonderful base to go to for dependable reviews. Perhaps more "insider" info from locals and natives could expand the offerings as Germany is noted for clean hotels and fine food across the board.
