More About the Author

After graduating from college in Chicago, Sara jumped on a plane to the West Coast with just one suitcase and $100 in her pocket. She landed in San Francisco, and today makes her home on the central California coast. She also spent three years living in Japan, after which she followed her wanderlust backpacking around Asia for almost a year before returning to the USA, where she has worked as a teacher, a journalist and a national park ranger. She is an all-seasons outdoor enthusiast.

The author of 50 travel and non-fiction books, Sara's writing has featured in national and international newspapers and magazines, including online content for the Los Angeles Times, National Geographic Traveler and Jetsetter. Sara has written for travel guidebook publishers including Lonely Planet, Frommer's, Compass American Guides (Fodor's), Wilderness Press and Countryman Press.

Her top-three favorite countries (so far, that is) are Nepal, Morocco and Cambodia, but Iceland, Namibia and Vietnam are next on her must-see life list. Back in the USA, her favorite places to hang out include California, Hawaii, Las Vegas and just about any national park. And her most memorable travel experience? Falling off a camel at the edge of the Sahara Desert.

Great book (I used the previous edition on my last trip to Utah four years ago, getting this edition for my upcoming return trip), but the main reason I'm writing this review is to let potential buyers know that this book covers ALL of Utah's national parks: Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef, in addition to Zion and Bryce. The book also covers lots of other land, including Grand Staircase-Escalante. So basically, this is the only book you need for a southern Utah road trip -- contrary to what one of the other reviewers said.

I am in Bryce Canyon right this minute in the lobby of the Bryce Canyon Lodge writing this review to say this little book is packed with more information than almost all the other books I brought with us (we travel by van and I bring a lot of books). Not saying the other books are bad but this one is tops. They really packed a lot of useful information in a compact book. We are headed to Zion next and I've started bookmarking pages already.

added later: Finding this book more and more useful, again with more information on the area between Bryce NP and Zion which is so very useful when one cannot get a signal for the internet (common here in the hinterlands). The internet has not yet replaced hard copy :-) We spent the night in Panguitch (pronounced "pang-wish") on our way to Zion. It listed all the motels and restaurants available with appropriate advice.

Ordered this book while planning a 23 day jeep/hiking/camping trip recently returned from. We visited 6 National Parks and 1 national Monument. Used this book extensively! Covers much more Zion and Bryce. Driving, lodging, dining, hiking info all used at times during our trip. I strongly recommend and i will be looking for Lonely Planet books for future trips also.

Get the logistical and other details before you go on a trip - it just makes the trip more meaningful. This excellent book, Zion & Bryce Canyon National Parks, written by Sarah Benson, Lisa Dunford and Carolyn McCarthy, provides wonderful conversations about history, geology, ecology, culture, and more. It is one of the most thorough informative and entertaining books I have yet read. It also provides information on Moab, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Grand staircase-Escalante, which I wish I had read the first time I was in those areas. fortunately, my brother and I are going to Bryce and Zion, so I'll be able to better enjoy them this time.

On the topic of travel books, Frommer and Fodor provide valuable information. I use those for logistics, and then I get the Dorling-Kindersley books for the cultural and historical information, plus the great detailed photos and 3D color line drawings of the sights and areas.

Soaking up this valuable information always enhances our trips so that we can deeply understand and appreciate where we are, who we are meeting, and what we are seeing.

The problem with guidebooks...all of the information is on the internet and often done in better formatting. However, if you are going to buy a book for zion/bryce, this is the one. It also includes information on Arches and Canyonlands. It has grade matrices for hikes in the parks, and good recommendations for traveling with kids.

We used this book to plan a trip to Zion & Bryce. This book has other national parks too but we did not read those chapters.

The chapter on Zion was fantastic. Lots of hikes were mentioned and well described - they had all expected turnouts and good maps. I can say this for sure for the hikes we did - Emerald Pools, Riverwalk and the Observation Point. Especially Observation Point, I knew from the book that the last mile or so is flat, and it was reassuring while we were working hard on the hike. We also liked the restaurant recommendations, especially Oscars which was their "pick". We went there twice.

The chapter on Bryce wasn't as good as the chapter on Zion. Due to time constraints (we were in Bryce for two half days) we were looking for several short hikes. The only short hikes mentioned were the Mossy cave (outside the park), Bristlecone loop trail and the Navajo-Queens garden combo. But on going there we found that there is another 4 mile hike at Swamp Canyon that was not mentioned in the book as a hike. Only if we knew in advance of this hike, we might have been able to plan our two-half days in Bryce better. Oh well. On looking into the book more I did find a reference to the trailhead on the driving tour. It would be nice if this hike was mentioned in future editions of the book.
