I found this guide book did a great job of providing enough information to guide me in planning for my next holiday. It gave brief but sufficient overview on a whole range of indoor, outdoor and cultural experiences. Every chapter starts with an overview map and where necessary for more detail and visual guidance there are quite a few inset/detail maps which really helps (a picture paints a thousand words and I find most guides long on text and short on maps so this book was a refreshing change!)

It gives decent coverage of all the various types of museums that caters for many different tastes, from wild west entertainment to military and aviation etc. with so many road criss-crossing the southwest, which route do you take? This guide describes the various options with scenery and attractions for each route, so that you can make an informed choice based on what might interest you.

very importantly (and in complete contrast to the Great Britain guide which I rated as one star!) this guide gives an indication of the time, distance, elevation gain and views and points of interest for the many outdoor walks. Just this brief sentence or two of walk guidance quickly allows you to select the few walks that you are really interested in, so that you can then follow up with more detailed planning on via the web or at the local visitor centre upon arrival.

well done to the authorship team for the diverse and adequate coverage

We are planning a trip to the southwest next year. This book has been great for researching and planning an itinerary. It is helpful with not only places to see but lodging and restaurants as well. Highly recommend this for anyone planning a trip to the southwest.

Used this on a weeklong vacation through Northern Arizona and the surrounding national parks. Very useful and clear. Would recommend it.

I'm a travel guide junkie. I love pouring over the pages and using these books (in combination with Yelp!) to find the best of every place I travel. I do flip flop between Fodor's and Lonely Planet being my favorites because each author is just different, but in this case Lonely Planet has hit it out the park. Granted there aren't a ton of travel guides (especially for New Mexico), but this one was especially funny and filled with great advice. I love the history and the quirky places it helps you find, as well as basic information. This one in particular had some great itineraries. I only wish it had included Texas as well (or at least the towns on Route 66 in Texas) since this is a great guide for those traveling on 66 or I-40.

This book is full of good info, but don't rely on it as your only information source. There are so many things to see in the Southwest that one book cannot cover it all. But, this is a good start.

We used an older edition 3 years ago and when we moved out to the southwest we wanted a newer edition. We love this guide and use it in all of the towns we go to. There is one restaurant that was listed in this edition and is now closed but otherwise it has been a big help. We recommend it and lend it out to visiting friends every chance we get.

The Kindle version is absolutely useless. There is no table of contents or index!
And the maps weren't usable on my ipad.

Welcome to Crowded Planet... everybody seems to be using Lonely Planet guides to travel; the information is very useful. I arranged my 13 day trip in what is known as the Grand Circle with the info given by this travel guide and it turned out excelent.

Alas, with so many people using this particular trade mark, is frequent to find restaurants and other spots very crowded because it was the Top Choice in Lonely Planet. But in defense of real traveling I say: give randomness a chance...

About the Kindle version: This is the one I bought and the one I recommend because you can have it with you on your cellphone, your tablet, your pc and of course your 21-day-battery-duration kindle. People often complain about the maps but I suspect they don't read the guide when it says that you can download all the maps for better viewing.
