I was looking for a short book about getting ready for a long series of hikes on the Appalachian Trail. I bought this book and it was well worth the price. It offers great advice in short sentences regarding what equipment you need, what options you have regarding price vs quality, what weather is generally like in various months at various locations on the trail at various elevations, clothing to take when it is cold and when it is warmer, etc. The only part that was missing was an adequate discussion about various types of food. It appears that the authors believe you can get what you need on the trail from grocery stores, outfitters and restaurants along the way or off the trail a short distance away. For those like me that want to buy the food in advance and have it mailed out, the book even has the US Post Offices that are on or near the Trail. All in all, it provides a wealth of information.

This book is a must have if you're planning a hiking trip on the AT whether it's a day hike, section hike, or thru hike. This book has very good detailed information about just about everything you need (outside of personal preference). Weather, elevation, mileage, topography, and other important points on the trail are included. If you're trying to plan an AT trip and aren't sure where to start or aren't confident about how to prepare, this is a major confidence boost. Hands down worth the money.
