Review

"We have long needed what no one before Claridge has provided: a synthesis, balanced and user-friendly, of all [the] recent scholarship, one that sets Roman monuments in their proper urban and historical contexts, and accurately describes what is currently known or thought about them. . . . [T]ravellers . . .will welcome a synthesis so balanced, intelligent and well informed, and will find Amanda Claridge a fine companion on their archaeological walks in Rome."--Times Literary Supplement

"Claridge's book will appeal to a range of readers--from armchair archaelogists to serious visitors and students of Rome's archaeology.... Recommended."--CHOICE

I've relied heavily on the prior edition of this guide over the last 10 years to guide me around, over and under the most beautiful city in the world and it's quickly become one of the most cherished books in my possession. This new edition is fully updated and reveals the most recent discoveries and sites which have been discovered/reopened. It even gives a detailed walk through of the House of Livia, which wasn't even opened to the public until months after the book was printed. This book is worth it's weight in gold to anyone trying to decipher and understand the mysteries and riddles of the eternal city. Cannot recommend enough

I have used previous editions of Claridge's book, both in the classroom and on-site in Rome. It is an excellent resource with clear plans, up-to-date information, and very helpful introductory chapters.

But what absolutely astounds me about this edition is the cover. Why on Earth has the oculus of the Pantheon--one of Rome's most iconic buildings--been edited out!? Not only have the designers/editors/whoever erased one of the most distinctive aspects of the Pantheon itself, but they will have befuddled a new generation of budding architectural historians.

I am a history buff on her way to Italy. This is awesome! Easy to read. Easy to wade through topics of uninterest or already-know-this. Pictures. All around very good for touring with the details.

I love this book, especially while I am studying a classical civilization subject. It is a list of all the classical sites you can see in Rome. Amanda Claridge not only has ancient maps regarding their ancient location, but goes through each sites and lists its history. At the back of the book is also a list of museums and their websites, opening and closing times, and ticket prices. A list of churchs and other free locations to visit are listed as well. This book has made my experience in Rome a lot better, allowing me not only to view Rome in its present modern state, but also to see it as it once was.

What other guidebook has provided me hours and hours of enriching reading, even when a visit to Rome might be fsr from contemplation. This work is surely the finest, most intelligent and comprehending guide to the vast brickpiles of Roman Antiquity, which so often baffle the non-expert visitor: You know they are something at which to marvel but what, in fact, is that huge brick and concrete jumble anyway?

Professor Claridge writes with authority, dexterity, insight and the comprehensive knowledge that only an acknowledged expert in her field can bring to bear. No Michelin Guide here although she does use a "star" system to help rank the astonishing range of sites and relicts to which ones attention is directed. I found a copy of this work in an English bookshop in Rome on my first visit many years ago and pretty much wore it out. The new edition offered here is substantially expanded and all the better for it. A must-have if you are visiting Rome, as I often do, to clamber over brickpiles, gaze up at coffered ceilings, and wonder the at the remains of this astonishing, polite and potent society and the historic events which echo down to present times.

The illustrations, such as they are in the Kindle edition, are a big disappointment. Why no photographs? Perhaps the print version has these?

This book is a great travel reference.

I used before a trip to check out sites.

I copied pages for the sites I was visiting along with sections from:
Use with The Pilgrim's Guide to Rome's Principal Churches: Illustrated Guided Tours of Fifty-one of the Most Important Churches of Rome.

I then printed off Google Maps images of site.

I added travel info.

Created a series of site packs.

Never got lost and knew exactly what I was seeing.
