A great little book, helped us find all the right spots to go. We only visited a few places in the guide as it was a short trip and the book was spot on with the write up's. We are moving to the area this year and will no doubt use the guide to help us find some other gems in new England. Many Thanks to Lonely Planet!

If you are among those that wonder if the Lonely Planet travel books are as good as some of those other ones you purchased in the past, rest assured these are up to date and very good travel books. You may have already been to the New England area and know quite a bit about everything there is to know about that area. This particular travel book on New England does not come with a pull out map, thus you need to pick one up at your travel service or order on the internet. There are many city and area maps contained throughout the book. There are a few color photos, at the beginning of the travel book, and I think personally this is a shortcoming on the part of the publisher.

The travel book is broken down into section dealing with six of the states plus specific info about the Boston and surrounding area and counties. At the beginning of the book there is a “Top 15” section for those places that would be interesting to visit. There are neat sections dealing with such articles as “Itineraries”, a “Month by Month” section on what is happening in each month, and “Regions At A Glance”. A lot of the pages will be devoted to a specific area, such as a township, as what is available in that area such as lodging and dining. While this is a start you will more than likely find that you will need the use of the internet to plan a really comprehensive trip to New England.

I personally think the book gives you a good foundation for your upcoming explorations of the area thus supplement this travel book with your other research information. There are places listed in the book such as lodging and dining that we know about and others we never heard of plus some we have been to which we thought were great that are not listed.

The world of travel guides is dominated by two giants: classic, illustrated in color, very detailed Baedeker (since 1839), and more exclusive, profusely illustrated in color, detailed Eyewitness Travel Guides. The new improved Lonely Planet (LP) is almost like Baedeker, but luckily for LP New England there is no Baedeker for the area, though unluckily there is an Eyewitness.

The content of approx. 154 pages of the book is shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the LP basic series including this ISBN 1742203000 New England has covers laminated only outside, its text is detailed comparably to the Eyewitness, however not as profusely illustrated and mostly only in 4 colors: black, blue, red, and beige, except a few dozens of pages with photos in full color printed on low quality paper.

Though the LP Discover series is in full color, it is less detailed than this improved LP basic series, has fewer illustrations than, and is not as good as, Eyewitness, which is 1 inch longer and thus less handy, but has the excellent flexible vinyl bindings, greater number of details, superior layout, graphics, clarity, and - in general - the quality of being a souvenir\memento.

This Lonely Planet guide to New England covers the essential sights in five states in less than 450 portable pages. The information is well organized in an easy-to-read format, tightly focused on the attractions most visitors are most likely to be interested in. The commentary is concise, up to date and very opinionated, which is just what many travelers in a hurry really want. There are some useful maps and diagrams, and lots of practical information on how to get around and what to avoid. The coverage of Boston is pretty good. There are no pictures past the covers; if you need pictures to motivate your visit, this book won't do it. And if you plan to get well off the beaten path, you might have to look beyond this guide. Recommended.

The "Lonely Planet New England (Travel Guide)" is better than not having anything, but I found it extremely incomplete, somewhat lacking, and with some incorrect information. Recently my wife and I planned for a trip to New England, and so fresh from weeks of research, reservations, and more, I was able to use this book to look at certain areas of Maine that I was now quite familiar with.
Sadly, I found areas where there are some wonderful local attractions and places to stay, that looked comparatively barren in this book. In addition there were places like lighthouses where this book mentions that they are "never" or "rarely" open to the public...which is simply not the case (having visited one of those listed as such),
Having said that, having any resource is better than nothing, and this, at is basic can at least offer the travel reader some guidance.

This was my first Lonely Planet travel guide and, quite frankly, I wasn't impressed. I've lived in New England for 27 years and I thought this would be a great book to help me find the paths not yet taken. It has, to some extent, but I still wonder what I'm missing. I say that, because there are a lot of scenic areas/things to see and do that are not to be found in this book -- so what else is missing? Perhaps it's because this one little book is attempting to cover so much geography. In any event, as I travel, I often find myself referring more to my iPad than this guide. Again, not a bad guide, it does reveal much, it's just not as good as I believe it could have been.
