It had the details I wanted -- text, beautiful photos and maps.

I've commissioned my wife Christine to find places she wants to see in person as she flips through this book so we can see them LIVE.

I'd consider this the ideal book to read BEFORE you plan your trip to new Zealand.

My wife and I visited New Zealand on our honeymoon on January of 2014.
We used the guide but mostly to get some extra information about the places we visited and less for getting information on planning the trip and our stays.
I think that there is a problem with books today as they are not up to date with the way most people travel these days - there is no mention of internet resources or how we can get a sim card for our devices - I don't think that this is a problem with this book but rather with all of them in general.

The book is filled with very interesting information and amazing pictures that will really make you want to go and visit but at least in our case, we had to use the internet (tripadvisor) for most of our travels.

I would recommend you get this book if you would like to plan your trip ahead of time and get excited doing so, I think it serves that purpose well, but as a guide you can use as a side companion, this does not do the trick.

Every company that puts out guidebooks has a different style.
National Geographic packs a lot of historical info into theirs. They also have a lot of excursions that connect close by sites laid out so you can use them if you want to take in a certain area in one day chunks of time.
From taking in the massive Kauri trees in the North to watching yellow eye penguins in the South, it's up to you to decide what you want to spend your time on.
For me, the variety of surfing, from gentle waves to the massive tow in Big Wave (Papas) surfing is one of the main attractions.
But I also like the winery tours, the horseback riding and other stuff such as diving with the dolphins.
What you go for is up to you.
But really, things like seeing stars and constellations that are different from what you see in the Northern Hemisphere is one of the main reasons to go. Meeting people from around the world that are there on vacation and chatting with them is also another reason to visit new Zealand.
I like this book but I would advise you to also buy other brands of tour books and compare them. New Zealand is an expensive trip and you should have various guidebooks so you can make the most of your time there.
A lot of activities are included in this book. Choose what interests you and put it to use for you.

I am planning a trip to New Zealand next year so I was very happy to get a copy of this book. It has information on most of the places I will be going to and provides history, cultural and artistic information, and ways to best enjoy each destination. There is a lot of information on outdoor activities. I was hoping that there would be more shopping guides as I was hoping to buy wool in New Zealand to support my knitting habit. Sadly, I could find nothing about yarn in this book. The shopping information was meager.

I think this book would appeal mostly to those who want a real outdoor and cultural experience in New Zealand and want to know its history.

This is a fairly comprehensive overview of New Zealand highlights. I particularly liked the photos, about one on each page. The book has some nice day trips and combo trips laid out so you can maximize your time while there. I do think one should think about getting another perspective to round out. This is not a book for backpackers particularly- I would look to Lonely Planet for those who want to travel on the cheap. That being said, I'm planning a trip to NZ next year and I am finding this to be a useful starting point for putting together an itinerary. So 4 stars.

While National Geographic knows how to provide solid, reputable travel information (along with gorgeous photography), this traveler’s guide to New Zealand lacks the one essential ingredient that any armchair traveler craves: excitement. There’s no there there, as Gertrude Stein might observe. It’s a comprehensive overview, but there’s just no spark.

For some, that might be enough. If all you need are driving (or walking) details to a certain New Zealand destination or the number and location of the country’s hot springs, for example, it’s provided. If you are looking to get jazzed up for a (hopefully not just) once-in-a-lifetime adventure to one of the most beautiful spots on the planet, you might want to look elsewhere.

The National Geographic book is perfectly serviceable and also perfectly dull. Even sections where readers might expect the author to let loose (exploring Middle Earth, for example), it’s aching dull. There’s no question that the book is jam-packed with information of all sorts (off-the-beaten path locations, historical and cultural data, visitor information and website addresses, ad infinitum), but there’s nothing to make readers want to sit down and dive into this material for more than a page or two at a time.

The book functions best as a reference book. Need information on the Kauri Coast? It’s there. Need ideas on a walk through Auckland? It’s there. Want some background on Maori culture? It’s there, too. Want to be inspired to plunk down thousands for an airline ticket half way around the globe? You’d better bring that with you to this book.

It’s hard to find fault with information. National Geographic always will give you that, in a comprehensive fashion that few can match. For travelers, however, it’s often the intrinsic where the appeal lies. If you want to be excited about going to New Zealand, it’s best to look elsewhere.
