I used this as my sole guidebook for a recent trip to Rio, and I was generally very happy with it. The breakdown of sights by neighborhood and the slew of tips for the top sights were very helpful. The shopping recommendations were not up to the usual Lonely Planet standard, so ask people for better recommendations when you get there. The writer also missed a cool free walking tour of downtown, Lapa, and Santa Teresa -- areas that are trickier to explore on your own -- called Free Walker Tours. By the time I learned about it from another traveler it was too late for me to fit it into my schedule (I was primarily there for work).
General Rio tip: Pre-book your visits to Corcovado and Sugarloaf online, so that you don't waste time waiting in line to catch a ride up. I was also very glad I got the first train of the day up Corcovado, because I got to enjoy the ride and Cristo with only a handful of other visitors. Don't think you can wait until 9am: the trains were packed and people had to wait in line in the hot sun.

This book was very helpful and allowed me to focus on the neighborhood I was in and to explore other places. Rio was too big to see it all, I differently will be coming back.

Very well written. Lots of lists, (which come in handy), and photos. The layout makes it much easier to grasp the info faster and form a plan, than other books. Will be buying only Lonely Planet from now on.
