More About the Author
Greg Bloom (b. 1969) is a Phnom Penh-based travel writer and editor. He specializes in writing guidebooks about Southeast Asia and the former Soviet Union. Over the years he has been detained by authorities in Uzbekistan, taken a shlagbaum to the head in Kyiv, jumped out of helicopters atop volcanoes in Kamchatka, hit 100km/h in a Latvian bobsled, flown out the back of a jeepney in Puerto Princesa, and survived a bus crash on the back roads of Bicol on the Philippine island of Luzon - mostly in the service of Lonely Planet.
Greg dabbled in careers as diverse as Christmas tree salesman, ski bum, PR flak and New York City bike messenger before moving to Ukraine in 1997 and settling into a career as a journalist. He was editor-in-chief of the Kyiv Post, an English-language weekly, from 1999 to 2003. He later lived in Manila for almost 5 years before moving to Cambodia in 2008. His travel articles have appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald, the South China Morning Post, the Toronto Globe & Mail and Action Asia, among other publications.

I've been using Lonely Planet guidebooks for the last 10 years and for various regions of the world. This is probably the most preachy and negative guidebook I have ever come across. I typically purchase a guidebook months in advance of my trips to learn more about the area and get excited for my vacation. I pre-ordered this book and was excited to receive it on the day of its release for the 2012 version. However, this book seems to dwell on the negative aspects of visiting the Philippines rather than the positives, with statistics on prostitution and discouraging tourism to popular beach locations. While I appreciate awareness in travelers for the environment and other cultural concerns, I feel this book was written from a biased perspective of people who not only are not enthusiastic about their subject matter but prone to over-criticizing a country that has something to offer tourists from different backgrounds and interests. I will think again before ordering another guidebook from LP, especially to non-European countries.

I have never been so dissappointed with a Lonely Planet book. I decided since I would be taking my ipad with me when I travel and it had a kindle app that it would be easier to get the kindle version and not have to carry a large book. IT is virtually worthless. There is no index, the table of contents is very limited and confusing. Contents lists not one location. To find Angeles City where I am working at an international school, you must click ON THE ROAD in the contents, then go to the heading AROUND MANILA, then scroll down to "Angeles and Cark Airport" click on this. THere are only listed 3 hotels for all of Angeles, and only 2 restaurants. then you are referred to go online for a city guide that had loads of cafes--so why waste money on the guide. The search feature is useless: I searched Manila Hotels and got zero responses, and there is no index. I don't want to spend an hour trying to figure out their crazy methods of navigating the book. WHy not put an index?? DOn't waste your money on the Kindle edition. It is an insult. I will try to get my money back.

There really is nothing to appreciate about this book. It is pretty negative and extremely dry. There is nothing about Fort Bonifacio in the book, which is irritating.

This book was ok - it had some good general information, but was lacking in most of the areas we were going in the Philippines. There was only a couple pages about Cebu and even less about Lapu Lapu and minimal on Dumaguete. The online kindle version that is just about the vistayas is much better (and repeats a lot of what this book has that is useful). I didn't even take the book with me on the trip.

This review is based on information about Manila and north.
Many basic facts were either wrong or misleading (Sagada is neither a "mist filled jungle town" nor do hikes there need a guide). Travel information was extremely vague. I presume that if you are buying this book for the high-intensity tourist areas (think surfing and scuba/snorkel areas) then perhaps it would be worth it. We wanted to stick to the less populated areas and have a hiking based trip. If you are thinking of the same, I would suggest using a different travel guide. If you are aiming south, maybe this will work for you.

This guide is insufficient and has too much information on Manila. 30% of the book talks about the capital, whereas all this information can be found on the internet. However, very limited information is displayed on the more remote areas, such as on Palawan.
In the areas where LP could be most helpful, that is in places that do not receive tourism practically, this guide is lacking. No maps or local references to out of the common spots can be found and the references included are a paste from on online forums.
For instance, if you want to visit some of the waterfalls or secluded beaches in Palawan, some tourist offices have directions in English written by foreign tourists that volunteered their time to provide some help to fellow travelers. If a tourist could achieve this during a vacation, then one has to assume that it would take very little time for LP to incorporate these into the book given that supposedly the authors travel to the region and are experts in the area. This is the value added expected by purchasing a guide that can make a difference.
Also, almost no maps available on most towns. This was truly disappointing and it is the first time that I see a LP guide with such few maps. I don't see the point on putting detailed drawings on areas that can be mapped from the internet, such as Manila. And the recommended spots are usually the most visited ones (i.e. hotels and tours in El Nido).
Another flaw is that the guide is wrong in some places. If you want to "find your own private island" in El Nido, it's not as easy as it appears in the LP guide (they refer to just packing your lunch and going).Read more ›

The physical version is much more practical, the electronic format is not suitable for the quick info searching that is needed while in vacation in a place one does not know.
