Radhanath Swamy provides an inspiring account of his journey - from being Richard, the confused hippie to Radhanth Swamy, a disciple of Swami Prabhupada. With modern education,it is inevitable that many of the Hindu practices, beliefs and stories seem unreal and sometimes ridiculous. With his western upbringing (and US education), Radhanath Swamy does a very good job of explaining his spiritual experiences in a language that would make sense to rational minds.

The chapters on his overland hitch hiking journey to India (almost as if pulled by an invisible string) are really inspiring. Equally interesting are his experiences on the banks of the river Ganga and in his cave dwellings. The encounters with Naga Sadhus and the other saints / gurus brings up memories of the Himalayan Masters by Swami Rama. Accounts of unconventional approaches for extending his visa multiple times with Indian immigration authorities are outright funny.

The autobiography seems to end a bit abruptly - would have been great to get some more insights into the years with Swami Prabhupada as the 'official' guru.

I bought this book during a chance visit to the ISKCON temple at Moundsville, West Virginia (New Vrindavan). Many thanks to the couple who sold this book to me and for providing me a peek into their experiences with Radhanath Swamy.

Love, Compassion, Adventure, Thrills, Devotion...All these are the experiences within the journey of this American Swami's search of God. If we really think about our self, we too have experienced the same emotions in our life at certain point of our lives but this beautiful journey compiled in this book will make the reader live through these experiences yet again. Once you start reading, try to stop reading and you wouldn't be able to...

A friend introduced this book to me. I've thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm thankful to have the opportunity to read it. It chronicles the author's journey through continiuous trials and tribulations to achieve spirtual knowledge and understanding though various mentors, yogis, and gurus. Despite the unsurmountable odds, his conviction to reach his goal and willingness to take risks lead him to some amazing events and the opportunity to meet some remarkable people along the way. From many of the lessons that he learned, we can relate these to our own lives and it helps to bring clarity in the direction our lives take. I can appreciate how he studied numerous religions along the way and brings insight to the reader by bridging the commonalities between each of them, thus signifying a focus on universal truths. This is a great read and it definitely has something in it for everyone!

Spirituality touches everyone. Those who abandon the traditional path in its favor are a curiosity to those of us who remain more attached to the material world. Learning the life history of a swami seemed like a fascinating tale, and so I expected.

It was fascinating as he went on a name dropping (Mother Teresa, etc) tour of the spiritual who's who of India and met the players. He described his rites of passage into the spiritual world. But the slice we get to see was narrow...just a brief time in his youth. A very short description in the last few pages outlines a life that is full of accomplishment and growth.

We see a young man ready for adventure, always afraid someone or something is about to kill him (amazing how many times he expects to die in a year), diving into religious practice. We know that this youth matures into a swami whose life accomplishments are significant and charitable, so it is of interest to know a piece of his history. However, we're not to get to know the man in his mature state or hear his questions, his work, or his depth. Maybe another chapter, reflecting the mature state of the swami will be forthcoming.

But read this if you have interest in Eastern religion, India, and adventurous travel across challenging cultures and terrain (including areas now war torn with Taliban). It's well written and the photos included are fascinating. He did what many idly consider. He endured the hardships and worked to find his guru. This is a work that will hold a place on the bookseller's shelves until there are no shelves...and will live on electronically from there.

After reading this book, I am convinced that this is a must read for anybody actively seeking to embrace any path or religion to find God. Not only is it easy to read and hard to put down (the suspense and drama are glorious, the narration is incredibly life-like, the characters jump out at you, etc.) but the wisdom and insights shared along the way are priceless...I felt myself growing with the author as I experienced his journey with him!

As is noted on the cover, it is truly an epic quest! Left me fulfilled and wanting to dig in deeper on my own...

This book is absolutely amazing. I started reading and couldn't put this book down. I gave it to my sister as a gift and she stayed up the whole night reading, and didn't put it down until she had finished. After my Dad took it up and the same thing happened. The other more profound transformation that happened for all of us is that we felt spiritually cleansed and purified with a sense of our awakened Divine nature, compassion, forgiveness, love, respect, and spiritual unity and purpose. Radhanatha Swami presents a sensible and yet emotionally engaged approach to practically applied spirituality. This book is highly recommended for any sincere spiritual seeker or practitioner.
