There are many positive reviews for this guide, and I am a regular traveler to Kauai so I figured I would grab this from my Vine offering and give it a fair review. I have been impressed with the Lonely Planet guides and have actually slightly preferred them to Fodor's and Frommer's.

Like any travel guide, this is a pretty straightforward listing of restaurants, hotels, and activities. But what makes this and the other Lonely Planet guides interesting is a very engaging style of writing.

The initial pages are devoted to the top 15 experiences as well as top itineraries. These are the best sections for newbies to the island as they cover some of the more interesting sights that folks seem drawn to. These are mostly outdoor sights (which is why one would be in Kauai I would think). The Na'Pali coast is probably the top attraction I would recommend, and this book highlights those outfits offering tours both by sea and air. There are also detailed sections on a few very nice trails which visitors can easily access.

The way the book is laid out is amazingly user friendly. Each section is broken down by region and then further broken down into lodging, restaurants, and attractions. The breakdown makes sense as each section of the island is almost a self contained area in itself. Lihue has a few interesting locales, but Poipu and Princeville seem to be the areas most travelers frequent. These areas are covered in detail.

The only area I would improve is on the local itinerary maps. The dots and lines and descriptions are a bit clustered and confusing. Granted, it's really tough to get lost, and most locals are willing to help with a bit of directions if asked, but they could have been a bit clearer.

I have been to Kauai twice. The advice in the new edition of Lonely Planet's Kauai about what to see is very useful and its driving directions are good. I take off two stars because their restaurant reviews seem quite off base. For instance, we visited a restaurant (Shrimp Station on Kuhio rd) based on their advice that it had "the best coconut shrimp on the planet" . It was horrible...as greasy as you can imagine and came with French fries that had been frozen and heated in old oil and were worse than tasteless. I cant believe that the person who wrote that restaurant review actually visited this place. I suggest they also update their information on diving and snorkeling spots. There seems to have been damage to the reefs over the years and a lot less fish in popular spots and they haven't updated their information to reflect this.

Discover Kaua'i is packed with fun and useful information for your next trip to the garden isle.
Lonely Planet books aren't just filled with maps like so many other books. They actually send people to destinations and check things out. Their books are organized and easy to follow, and offer up helpful tips.

Since Kaua'i is not heavily populated like Maui or Oahu, it can be tough finding things to do if you're already familiar with the island. But Lonely Planet's guide has info on restaurants, beaches, museums, parks, even a few spots where you can pick up a tour... via bus or helicopter!

The photos and maps aren't just informative, but they'll also help you plan your trip before you go. However, if you're more spontaneous, just take the book with you and use it as your own Puka Shell Tour Guide as you make your way around the island.

I've never "experienced" a lonely planet travel guide, but with the highlights, itineraries, "sustainable travel tips and resources", and the maps I found it to be an impressive, enjoyable experience. One thing I noticed that was different from other guides was that comparatively speaking, the layout seemed less cluttered and frantic than other guides. The numerous photographs, sidebars, and maps were formatted so nicely the book was an uncluttered visual treat.

The fore edge of the book is color-coded for quick reference. I was able to quickly open the book to Lihu'e, Kapa'a & the Eastside, Hanalei & the North Shore, Po'ipu & the South Shore, or the Waimea Canyon & the Westside quickly and easily. This aspect makes comparisons doable because the setup of each area is simple. Each one has a brief overview, generalized map, two- and four-day trip/activity suggestions, a bit of history, sights, activities, etc.

The introductory material will be an excellent help for those people who aren't exactly decisive. The setup makes it a little easier to make decisions prior to heading out. Personally, I like to purchase a few guidebooks before I leave and do additional research on the Internet. If every little detail were included, these guides would be encyclopedic. The flow of the book is nice and whether you are heading to Kaua'i, planning a trip in the distant future, or simply an armchair traveler, this is one guidebook you'll enjoy.
